  1. 1. Challenges and Opportunities For Safe Water Supply in Mozambique

    Author : Nelson Matsinhe; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; service quality; sustainability.; water treatment; water supply;

    Abstract : In Mozambique, despite considerable investments in the promotion of drinking water supplies, the access to quality water of sufficient quantity for the majority of people is still far from optimal. Current official figures report that nearly half of the country´s population and about 45 per cent of urban residents do not have access to safe water. READ MORE

  2. 2. Overcoming inertia to sustainable stormwater management practice

    Author : Annicka Cettner; Sarah Bell; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; VA-teknik; Urban Water Engineering;

    Abstract : In Sweden, there is a growing receptivity for change to more sustainable stormwater practices using green infrastructure approaches. Unlike piped drainage systems they can have multiple benefits in use including flood control, pollutant removal and can add to the quality of urban space supporting green infrastructure through irrigation and providing cooling and an additional water source for supply. 3. 3. Biofiltration technologies for stormwater quality treatment

    Author : Godecke-Tobias Blecken; Jean-Luc Bertrand-Krajewski; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; VA-teknik; Urban Water Engineering;

    Abstract : Due to high runoff volumes and peak flows, and significant contamination with (inter alia) sediment, metals, nutrients, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and salt, urban stormwater is a major cause of degradation of urban water ways. Since current urban drainage systems, which heavily rely on piped sewer networks, may not be sustainable, attempts are being made to develop and refine sustainable urban drainage solutions, notably in Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) and Low Impact Development (LID) concepts. 4. 4. Accumulation and Composition of Gully Pot Sediments under Varying Anthropogenic Activities

    Author : Haoyu Wei; Lian Lundy; Maria Viklander; David Butler; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Catch basin; Stormwater; Sediment; Urban runoff; Xenobiotics; Gully pot maintenance; Emerging pollutant; VA-teknik; Urban Water Engineering;

    Abstract : Gully pots (GPs) are an integral urban drainage component, contributing to conveying runoff from urban surfaces and reducing the load of solids and associated contaminants entering downstream piped systems and receiving waters. Over time, the silting-up of GPs impairs their hydraulic performance, increasing the risk of GP blockage-induced flood events and reducing solids retention performance. READ MORE

  5. 5. Public Health Programmes, Healthcare and Child Health

    Author : Daniel Knutsson; Per Pettersson-Lidbom; Mårten Palme; Sonia Bhalotra; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Public Health; Mortality; Infant Mortality; Piped Water; Well-visits; Crowding; Delivery Care; Sulfa; Information; Clean Water; Neonatal Mortality; Economics; nationalekonomi;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of three self-contained chapters.Modern Medicine, Public Policy and Infant Health: Evidence from a Preventive Health Programme in Sweden. This paper explores a universal preventive health programme targeting infants that coincided in time with the introduction and availability of an early antibiotic, sulfa. READ MORE
