1. Sarcoidosis : inflammatory mechanisms and markers of activity
Abstract : Sarcoidosis is a disease characterized by an accumulation of CD4+ T-lymphocytes in affected organs. Previous findings of an association between the HLA-allele DR17 and an accumulation in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of CD4+ T-lymphocytes expressing the T-cell receptor (TCR) V gene segment AV2S3, is in line with an aetiological hypothesis claiming that sarcoidosis is elicited by a specific antigen(s) in genetically predisposed individuals. 2. Hereditary Nonpolyposis Colorectal Cancer - Molecular Genetics and Biology of Associated Tumors
Abstract : This thesis focuses on one of the most common types of hereditary cancer, hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). This syndrome is characterized by an autosomal dominant inheritance, an increased risk for several types of cancer (especially cancer of the colorectum, small bowel, endometrium, ovary and urinary tract), early age at diagnosis, and frequent development of multiple primary malignancies. 3. Molecular Etiology of Graves’ Disease and Associated Ophthalmopathy
Abstract : Graves' disease (GD) is a complex autoimmune disorder characterized by hyperthyroidism and diffuse goitre. 25-50% of the patients with GD develop eye symptoms, Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO). The overall aim of this thesis was to explore the molecular etiology of GD and GO. READ MORE

4. Modelling and Experimental Investigations on Thermal Radiation in Combustion Environments
Abstract : Thermal radiation is an important physical phenomenon in combustion environments. For the understanding of existing- and the design of new combustion environments computational modelling is a useful tool as it can describe the different transport phenomena. READ MORE

5. On parabolic equations of Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck type
Abstract : In this thesis solutions to Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck type equations are studied. It consists of a comprehensive summary and four scientific articles. In the first article a potential theory for certain strongly degenerate parabolic operators in unbounded domains of Lipschitz type is developed.
