1. The Formation of Giant Planets
Abstract : Giant planets form embedded in a protoplanetary disc around a young star. Close to the midplane a large fraction of the available mass in solids is found in particles of cm to dm in size, which drift towards the star due to friction with the surrounding gas. READ MORE

2. Instrumentation for energetic Neutral atom measurements at Mars, Venus and The Earth
Abstract : This thesis deals with the development and calibrations of sensors to measure energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) at Mars, Venus, and the Earth. ENAs are formed in charge exchange processes between energetic, singly--charged ions and a cold neutral gas. READ MORE

3. Formation of Pebble-Pile Planetesimals and the Interior Structure of Comets
Abstract : Planets form in protoplanetary discs of gas, dust and ice around newborn stars. In the Solar System, not only planets are found as a result from the time of planet formation, but also remnant planetesimals in the form of asteroids, Kuiper belt objects and comets. Recent observations, e.g. READ MORE

4. Formation and Early Evolution of Planetary Systems
Abstract : Over the past 20 years we have discovered that exoplanets are common in the Galaxy, and are far more diverse than anyone expected. Half of all Sun-like stars are accompanied by at least one super-Earth (a planet with a size between Earth and Neptune), many planets have very high eccentricities indicative of a dynamical origin, and a small fraction of stars are accompanied by hot Jupiters, whose origin is poorly understood. 5. Cooling the Envelopes of Gas Giants : Accretion, structure formation and observability
Abstract : We know now that discs of gas and dust, so-called protoplanetary discs, form planets as side-products of the naturally occurring star formation process throughout the Milky Way. Young, growing planets in such discs are commonly referred to as protoplanets. READ MORE
