  1. 16. Specificity in natural and artificial cyanobacterial symbioses

    Author : Malin Nilsson; Kristina Lindström; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : Cyanobacteria, primarily of the genus Nostoc, form symbioses with a wide variety of plants. The diversity of cyanobacterial strains in these symbioses, and the specificity of interaction, vary greatly. A high diversity at the strain level has been suggested for bryophytes and cycads, whereas a low diversity is found in lichens. READ MORE

  2. 17. Genetic variability and nitrogenase activity of cyanobacterial communities associated with tropical seagrass meadows (western Indian Ocean)

    Author : Mariam Hamisi; Birgitta Bergman; Thomas Lyimo; Beatriz Díez; Lucas Stal; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cyanobacteria; nitrogenase activity; diazotrophs; seagrass; western Indian ocean; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Tropical seagrass ecosystems are highly productive and important for sustaining marine life and associated coastal societies. In this study, the diversity and role of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria associated with five common seagrass genera in coastal regions of the western Indian Ocean (WIO; Tanzania) were examined, as well as the impact of anthropogenic activities. 3. 18. Heavy metal contamination and toxicity : Studies of Macroalgae from the Tanzanian Coast

    Author : Florence Alex Mamboya; Mats Björk; Nils Ekelund; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Heavy metals; Padina gymnospora; Ulva reticulata; salinity; nutrients; proteins; uptake; growth; Fv Fm; Zanzibar Channel; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : Concentrations of various metals are elevated above background levels in several intertidal areas along the Tanzanian coasts. However, there is little available information concerning the toxicity of these metals and how the uptake of these metals by bioindicators are influenced by external factors, such as heavy rains and increased coastal eutrophication, which tend to fluctuate. 4. 19. Seagrasses and Eutrophication : Interactions between seagrass photosynthesis, epiphytes, macroalgae and mussels

    Author : Esther Francis Mvungi; Mats Björk; Thomas J. Lyimo; Jens Borum; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; CO2; epiphytes; eutrophication; mussels; pH; Photosynthetic activities; seagrasses; Ulva; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Seagrass meadows are highly productive, ecologically and economically valuable ecosystems. However, increased human activities along the coastal areas leading to processes such as eutrophication have resulted in the rapid loss and deterioration of seagrass ecosystems worldwide. READ MORE

  5. 20. Towards an understanding of diazocyte development and diazotrophy in the marine cyanobacterium Trichodesmium

    Author : Gustaf Sandh; Birgitta Bergman; Rehab El-Shehawy; Louis Sherman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cyanobacteria; Trichodesmium; diazocyte; cell differentiation; nitrogen fixation; cell division; flavodoxin; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Trichodesmium is a filamentous cyanobacterium of great ecological significance as it contributes significantly to primary production in oceans through an efficient nitrogen fixation strategy, including a unique cell type, the diazocyte. The aim of this thesis was to generate a deeper understanding of the structural and molecular background related to the development of diazocytes and the maintenance of diazotrophy in Trichodesmium erythraeum IMS101.
