  1. 11. Voltage-dependent anion channels (VDAC) in the plasma membrane induce apoptosis

    Author : Nesar Akanda; Fredrik Elinder; Tuula Jalonen; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Physiology; Apoptosis; Cell membrane; Hippocampus; Membrane potentials; Neurons; Voltage-dependent anion channels; Medicine; Medicin;

    Abstract : Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is essential for proper development and functioning of the body systems. During development, apoptosis plays a central role to sculpt the embryo, and in adults, to maintain tissue homeostasis by eliminating redundant, damaged or effete cells. Therefore, a tight regulation of this process is essential. READ MORE

  2. 12. Plasma Membrane Proteomics and Functional Characterization & Expression Profiling of Plant Aquaporins

    Author : Erik Alexandersson; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Växtbiokemi; Plant biochemistry; phosphorylation; barley; GFP; GUS; quantitative real-time reverse transcriptase PCR; microarray; aquaporin; MIP; Arabidopsis; plasma membrane; proteomics;

    Abstract : In order to identify integral and peripheral proteins associated with the plasma membrane (PM), highly purified Arabidopsis PMs were analyzed by mass spectrometry. In total, 238 putative PM proteins were identified, of which 114 were predicted to have transmembrane domains or to be PM-anchored. READ MORE

  3. 13. The Plasma Membrane H+-ATPase - Identification of a 14-3-3 binding motif

    Author : Fredrik Svennelid; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; regulation; Plant biochemistry; Växtbiokemi; plasma membrane; plant; phosphorylation; isoforms; H -ATPase; fusicoccin; C terminus; binding motif; 14-3-3; autoinhibitory domain;

    Abstract : The P-type plasma membrane H+-ATPases form a group of proteins only found in plants and fungi. The pumping of protons across the plasma membrane, energized by ATP hydrolysis, creates an electrochemical gradient that is essential for solute transport and internal pH regulation. READ MORE

  4. 14. Regulators of Membrane Fluidity

    Author : Kiran Busayavalasa; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PAQR; LRIG; membrane fluidity;

    Abstract : Caenorhabditis elegans PAQR-2 (a homolog of the mammalian AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 proteins) and IGLR-2 (homolog of the mammalian LRIG proteins) form a complex at the plasma membrane that regulates fatty acid desaturation to protect against saturated fatty acid-induced membrane rigidification. Maintenance of membrane homeostasis is fundamental for most cellular processes and, given its importance, robust regulatory mechanisms must exist that adjust lipid composition to compensate for dietary variation. 5. 15. Insane in the membrane: : Insertion of marginally hyrdophobic transmembrane helices and global analysis of membrane protein topology

    Author : Daniel Nilsson; Arne Elofsson; Susanna Törnroth Horsefield; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Proteins are responsible for carrying out most of the tasks in a living cell; transcription, translation, replication, movement, catalysis and communication to mention a few. A subset of proteins is the integral membrane proteins, IMPs, which play an important role in governing communication across membranes, whether it is the plasma membrane or an organelle membrane.
