1. Food intake, fibrinolysis and risk factors for cardiovascular disease : studies with special focus on plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1)
Abstract : Elevated plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) activity levels, hyperlipemia, hypertension, impaired glucose tolerance and obesity, in particular central obesity, are all related to increased risk for the development of cardiovascular disease. Some risk factors are known to be and shown to be influenced by dietary habits. 2. Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1 and the Insulin Resistance Syndrome
Abstract : In this thesis, different aspects of the insulin resistance syndrome in relation to plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) activity are investigated in a longitudinal population-based study. Participants were men investigated at ages 50 and 70 with follow-up data on mortality. READ MORE

3. On the Regulation of the Serine Protease t-PA and its Inhibitor PAI-1 in the Brain
Abstract : The serine protease tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) is the main fibrinolytic enzyme in the vascular system, and thus plays a critical role in the dissolution of thrombi. In recent years, researchers have focused on its role within the brain, where t-PA has been shown to participate in a number of physiological and pathophysiological processes, including various aspects of synaptic plasticity and neurodegeneration. 4. Blood Pressure Elevation - Impact on Cardiovascular Structure and Endogenous Fibrinolysis
Abstract : Blood pressure elevation is a major risk factor for cardiovascular events and the risk increases in a dose-dependant manner. It is of importance to identify subjects prone to develop hypertension and adverse cardiovascular remodeling in order to start treatment timely. READ MORE

5. Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor 1 in Platelets - Studies of Synthesis, Activity, and Glycosylation Patterns
Abstract : Plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) is the main physiological inhibitor of tissue-type plasminogen activator. Thus PAI-1 plays an important role in decreasing the fibrinolytic activity in human blood. PAI-1 is present in high concentrations in platelets and also in low concentrations in plasma, but the source of plasma PAI-1 is not known. READ MORE
