  1. 6. Uncovering the genetics underlying host-parasite interactions during Plasmodium falciparum malaria transmission

    Author : Mubasher Mohammed; Johan Ankarklev; David Serre; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Malaria; Plasmodium falciparum; Genomics; single-cell RNA-seq; Parasite cell fate; Anopheles gambiae; ApiAP2 transcription factors; driver genes; computational biology; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : In eukaryotes, cellular differentiation is often orchestrated by programmed arrays of activation and repression of genes underlying the specific phenotypes of cell-types. To complete its life cycle, the single-celled Apicomplexan parasite Plasmodium falciparum, the most deadly of the human malaria parasites, must repeatedly differentiate and convert into unique cell types that can exploit niches within their human and mosquito hosts. 2. 7. Immunological characteristics of recombinant fragments of the Plasmodium falciparum blood-stage antigen Pf332

    Author : Halima A. Balogun; Klavs Berzins; Lars Hviid; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Plasmodium falciparum; Pf332; antibodies; immunity; growth inhibition; Immunology; Immunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : Effective malaria vaccine might help improve control strategies against malaria, but the complexity of interactions between the parasite and its hosts poses challenges. The asexual blood stage P. falciparum antigen Pf332 has potentials as one of the proteins in understanding the complex host-parasite interactions. READ MORE

  3. 8. In Vitro Studies of Factors Potentially Affecting Plasmodium Falciparum Infection : (Heparin and Anti-P. falciparum Immune Responses)

    Author : Asli Kulane; Birthe Högh; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Immunology; Immunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : Plasmodium falciparum malaria is considered one of the major infectious diseases in humans, with regard to mortality and morbidity. Growing resistance of malaria to most anti-malaria drugs and of the Anopheles mosquitoes to insecticides have resulted in a global resurgence of the disease. READ MORE

  4. 9. Antibody responses and Fc gamma receptor IIa polymorphism in relation to Plasmodium falciparum malaria

    Author : Nnaemeka C. Iriemenam; Klavs Berzins; Marita Troye-Blomberg; Philippe Deloron; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; malaria; Plasmodium falciparum; blood-stage; antibodies; antigens; logistic models; risk factors; age factors; merozoites; IgG subclasses; Fc gamma RIIa; single nucleotide polymorphism; ethnicity; endemicity; disease susceptibility; Immunology; Immunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : Immunity to asexual blood-stage of Plasmodium falciparum malaria is believed to be associated with protective antibodies of certain immunoglobulin classes and subclasses. This thesis addressed the importance of antibodies in relation to malaria infection and their effective interactions with Fc gamma receptor IIa (FcyRIIa) polymorphisms. READ MORE

  5. 10. Dynamics of Resistant Plasmodium falciparum Parasites

    Author : Nizar Enweji; Göte Swedberg; Anna Färnert; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Molekylär genetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Abstract : Persistence of drug resistant Plasmodium falciparum is a major problem to management and control malaria in endemic areas. The focus of this thesis was to study the dynamics of resistant P. falciparum parasites. READ MORE
