  1. 1. Strength and deformability of fractured rocks

    Author : Majid Noorian-Bidgoli; Lanru Jing; John A. Hudson; KTH; []
    Keywords : Fractured crystalline rocks; Numerical experiments; Discrete element methods DEM ; Discrete fracture network DFN ; Representative elementary volume REV ; Coupled hydro-mechanical processes; Anisotropy; Effective stress; Failure criteria; Stochastic realizations; Land and Water Resources Engineering; Mark- och vattenteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis presents a systematic numerical modeling framework to simulate the stress-deformation and coupled stress-deformation-flow processes by performing uniaxial and biaxial compressive tests on fractured rock models with considering the effects of different loading conditions, different loading directions (anisotropy), and coupled hydro-mechanical processes for evaluating strength and deformability behavior of fractured rocks. By using code UDEC of discrete element method (DEM), a series of numerical experiments were conducted on discrete fracture network models (DFN) at an established representative elementary volume (REV), based on realistic geometrical and mechanical data of fracture systems from field mapping at Sellafield, UK. 2. 2. Magnetic fabrics and paleomagnetism of the Storsjön-Edsbyn deformation zone, central Sweden

    Author : Håkan Mattsson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Tillämpad geofysik; Applied Geophysics;

    Abstract : Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) and paleomagnetic data from the Storsjön-Edsbyn Deformation Zone (SEDZ) in central Sweden are presented. The SEDZ is a regional shear zone c. 200km in length that cuts through 1.7-1. READ MORE

  3. 3. Magnetic anisotropy and paleomagnetism of precambrian rocks in the Fennoscandian shield

    Author : Håkan Johannes Mattsson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Tillämpad geofysik; Applied Geophysics;

    Abstract : This thesis presents three applications of the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) technique, dealing with tectonic and magmatic flow fabrics of Proterozoic igneous rocks in the central and northern parts of the Fennoscandian Shield. Paleomagnetic measurements were performed in attempts to put the different rock units into a geological and plate tectonic context. READ MORE

  4. 4. Assessing the reliability of detrital zircon in Early-Earth provenance studies

    Author : Ross Kielman; Martin Whitehouse; Alexander Nemchin; Victoria Pease; Marlina Elburg; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geology; geologi;

    Abstract : Our understanding of the Early Earth and the processes that have shaped its evolution have spawned predominantly from the geochemical and isotopic signatures of a small number of zircon populations around the world. Studies of trace element distributions, Hf and O isotope systematics as well as mineral inclusion chemistry in detrital zircon are combined with U-Pb chronology in order to constrain source rock characteristics. 5. 5. Origin of the Kleva Ni-Cu sulphide mineralisation in Småland, southeast Sweden

    Author : Karolina Bjärnborg; Berggrundsgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Palaeoproterozoic; Fennoscandia; geochronology; geochemistry; sulphide remobilisation; gabbro–diorite; mantle; arc; ore genesis; Ni-Cu sulphide deposit;

    Abstract : The Kleva Ni-Cu sulphide deposit is situated within a gabbro-diorite intrusive complex in southeast Sweden. The basement north of the intrusive complex is dominated by 1.81–1.77 Ga granites of the Palaeoproterozoic Transscandinavian Igneous Belt (TIB). READ MORE
