  1. 1. Explanation and deduction : a defence of deductive chauvinism

    Author : Henrik Hållsten; Matti Sintonen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Deductive explanation; Statistical explanation; Chances; Propensities; Probabilities; Sine qua non; Probabilistic causality; Indeterminism; Ideal explanatory text; Explanatory information; Explanatory sketches; Dynamic systems; Chaotic systems; Approximate solutions; Argument generating procedure. Central figures: Hempel; Coffa; Salmon; Railton; Humphreys; Kitcher; Poincaré; Suppes; Lorenz; Hénon.; Theoretical Philosophy; teoretisk filosofi;

    Abstract : In this essay I defend the notion of deductive explanation mainly against two types of putative counterexamples: those found in genuinely indeterministic systems and those found in complex dynamic systems. Using Railton's notions of explanatory information and ideal explanatory text, deductivism is defended in an indeterministic setting. READ MORE

  2. 2. Some Extensions of Poincaré-Bendixson Theory Applied to a Resonant Converter

    Author : Jan Melin; Matematik LTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Datalogi; numerisk analys; system; kontroll; numerical analysis; systems; control; Naturvetenskap; Computer science; Natural science; Poincaré-Bendixson Theory; Limit Cycles; Resonant Converter; Distributions; Piecewise Linear Systems;

    Abstract : In this thesis existence and uniqueness of limit cycles are shown for a resonant converter, by extending Poincaré-Bendixson theory to non-smooth vector fields. We discuss relevant control theory and the role of simulations... READ MORE

  3. 3. Capacities, Poincaré inequalities and gluing metric spaces

    Author : Andreas Christensen; Anders Björn; Jana Björn; Tomas Sjödin; Tapio Rajala; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of an introduction, and one research paper with results related to potential theory both in the classical Euclidean setting, as well as in quite general metric spaces.The introduction contains a theoretical and historical background of some basic concepts, and their more modern generalisations to metric spaces developed in the last 30 years. 5. 5. Sobolev-Type Spaces : Properties of Newtonian Functions Based on Quasi-Banach Function Lattices in Metric Spaces

    Author : Lukáš Malý; Anders Björn; Jana Björn; Tomas Sjödin; Andrea Cianchi; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Newtonian space; Sobolev-type space; metric measure space; upper gradient; Sobolev capacity; Banach function lattice; quasi-normed space; rearrangement-invariant space; maximal operator; Lipschitz function; regularization; weak boundedness; density of Lipschitz functions; quasi-continuity; continuity; doubling measure; Poincaré inequality;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of four papers and focuses on function spaces related to first-order analysis in abstract metric measure spaces. The classical (i.e., Sobolev) theory in Euclidean spaces makes use of summability of distributional gradients, whose definition depends on the linear structure of Rn. READ MORE
