  1. 16. Health effects of air pollution in Iceland : respiratory health in volcanic environments

    Author : Hanne Krage Carlsen; Anna Oudin; Thorarinn Gislason; Kadri Meister; Bertil Forsberg; Gunilla Wieslander; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Respiratory health; air pollution; volcanic ash; epidemiology; hydrogen sulfide.; Epidemiology; epidemiologi; folkhälsa; Public health;

    Abstract : Air pollution has adverse effects on human health. The respiratory system is the most exposed and short-term changes in air pollution levels have been associated with worsening of asthma symptoms and increased rates of heart attacks and stroke. Air pollution in cities due to traffic is the major concern, as many people are exposed. READ MORE

  2. 17. Waterborne pollution from mining in cold climates : Potential catchment-scale immobilization of substances by microbial sulfate reduction (MSR)

    Author : Sandra Fischer; Jerker Jarsjö; Gunhild Rosqvist; Carl-Magnus Mörth; Anna-Kaisa Ronkanen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic; abandoned mines; metal pollution; sulfur isotopes; bacterial sulfate reduction BSR ; nature-based solution NBS ; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : Waterborne pollution from mining is impacting groundwater and surface water resources in many regions of the world. Main problems include acidification and high levels of dissolved toxic metals that adversely affect humans and ecosystems. READ MORE

  3. 18. Nest-site attendance and foraging ecology of the Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis) on the Faroe Islands. Is the Northern Fulmar a useful indicator of ecosystem productivity and pollution?

    Author : Johannis Danielsen; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nest-site attendance; foraging ecology; indicator species; Fulmar; Fulmarus glacialis; nocturnal activity; ecosystem productivity; pollution; mesopelagic fish;

    Abstract : The Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis) is one of the most abundant seabirds in the Northern Hemisphere and the most abundant seabird on the Faroe Islands. Except from a few sporadic observations up until the 1950´s no study has focused on this species on the Faroe Islands. READ MORE

  4. 19. Air pollution and health – Indicators, trends and impacts

    Author : Henrik Olstrup; Christer Johansson; Christina Ruden; Bertil Forsberg; Alain Le Tertre; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; air pollution; health; measurements; trends; impacts; mortality; NOx; elemental carbon; AQHI; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on some of the limitations and difficulties that exist when it comes to quantifying the human health effects that arise as a result of air pollution exposure. The following four issues are particularly analysed and discussed: 1) The measurement techniques used for carbonaceous particles and their lack of consistency; 2) Do the health risks associated with exposure to PM10 depend on the content of elemental carbon in the aerosol?; 3) Trends in air pollutants and the health effects that arise as a result of changed exposure to the measured pollutants; 4) The associations between the measured concentrations of different air pollutants in Stockholm and the daily number deaths; 5) Air quality indicators and health outcomes as basis for an air quality health index (AQHI). 5. 20. Air pollution and dementia in a low exposure setting : the role of noise, olfaction, and theapoe gene

    Author : John Andersson; Maria Nordin; Anna Oudin; Anna Sundström; Tom Russ; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Air pollution; Road traffic; NOx; dementia; APOE; Alzheimer’s disease; Apolipoprotein E; olfaction; particulate matter; vascular dementia; odor identification; odor detection; Psychology; psykologi;

    Abstract : Previous research indicates an association between air pollution exposure, and risk of dementia. Still, a number of factors that may play a role in this association remain to be explored. READ MORE
