  1. 1. Cellulose derived carbon dots : From synthesis to evaluation as multifunctional building blocks in biomedical scaffolds

    Author : Nejla Benyahia Erdal; Minna Hakkarainen; Jukka Seppälä; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; cellulose; microwave; carbon dots; polycaprolactone; scaffold; mineralization; drug loading; cellulosa; mikrovågor; kolnanopartiklar; polykaprolakton; stödmatris för vävnadsregenerering; mineralisering; läkemedelsbärare; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : The implementation of biobased and biodegradable polymeric materials in biomedical applications is often coupled with issues related to their insufficient mechanical properties or limited bioactivity. In this thesis, a perspective on valorization of biomass is presented, demonstrating the transformation of cellulose into biobased carbon nanomaterials with the potential to serve as multifunctional property enhancers in polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffold materials for tissue engineering. 2. 2. Ring-opening polymerization from cellulose for biocomposite applications

    Author : Hanna Lönnberg; Anders Hult; David Plackett; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cellulose; ring-opening polymerization; polycaprolactone; grafting from; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : There is an emerging interest in the development of sustainable materials with high performance. Cellulose is promising in this regard as it is a renewablere source with high specific properties, which can be utilized as strong reinforcements in novel biocomposites. READ MORE

  3. 3. Innate Confinement Effects in PCL Oligomers as a  Route to Confined Space Crystallisation

    Author : Nima Sanandaji; Ulf W. Gedde; Mikael Hedenqvist; Lars Kloo; Ulrica Edlund; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Crystallisation; Polycaprolactone; PCL; Confined state crystallisation; Metastable Phases; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : In this work, an in-depth analysis of crystalline characteristics has been performed for a unique set of strictly monodisperse poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) oligomers. The molecules have different sets of end groups with various degrees of bulkiness and hydrogen bonding potential, affecting their aptitude to pack in ordered crystal structures. READ MORE

  4. 4. Lignocellulose Biocomposites– A Comparison of Wood Fibers and Microfibrillated Lignocellulose

    Author : Erfan Oliaei; Lars Berglund; Tom S. C. Lindström; Fredrik Berthold; ‪Maria Soledad Peresin; KTH; []

    Abstract : All-lignocellulose composites, meaning densified fiber or fibril materials without added binder, show interesting mechanical properties and can be eco-friendly. Composites based on hot-pressed microfibrillated lignocellulose (MFLC) and lignocellulosic wood fiber (WF) reinforcements are compared with respect to processing, structure, mechanical properties, and eco-indicators.
