  1. 1. Population viability analysis for plants : practical recommendations and applications

    Author : Satu Ramula; Kari Lehtilä; Patrik Dinnétz; Esa Ranta; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; demography; matrix population models; population viability analysis; population growth rate; stochastic models; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Population viability analysis (PVA) is commonly used in conservation biology to predict population viability in terms of population growth rate and risk of extinction. However, large data requirements limit the use of PVA for many rare and threatened species. READ MORE

  2. 2. Effects of size-dependent predation and competition on population and community dynamics

    Author : Karin Nilsson; Lennart Persson; Volker Rudolf; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : size-structure; cannibalism; resource competition; predation; emergent facilitation; population regulation; population dynamics; overcompensation; density-dependence; cycles; zooekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Most animals grow substantially during their lifetime and change in competitive ability, predatory capacity and their susceptibility to predation as they grow. This thesis addresses the implications of this on regulation and dynamics within populations as well as between population interactions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Population ecology of perch (Perca fluviatilis) in boreal lakes

    Author : Arne Linløkken; Eva Bergman; Larry Greenberg; Anders Hargeby; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; perch; growth; size; mortality; temperature; acidification; density; roach; competition; Biology; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : I studied the effects of temperature, pH, competition and predation on Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) in 30 lakes in Norway during 1981-2001. The study lakes were situated in two different areas in southern Norway; four lakes in Aust-Agder county in southernmost Norway were explored during 1981-1984 and 26 lakes in Hedmark county in south-eastern Norway were investigated during 1992-2001. 5. 5. Population modeling using harpacticoid copepods : Bridging the gap between individual-level effects and protection goals of environmental risk assessment

    Author : Elin Lundström Belleza; Magnus Breitholtz; Annemette Palmqvist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Population modeling; Eco toxicity tests; Environmental risk assessment; Harpacticoid copepods; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : To protect the environment from contaminants, environmental risk assessment (ERA) evaluates the risk of adverse effects to populations, communities and ecosystems. Environmental management decisions rely on ERAs, which commonly are based on a few endpoints at the individual organism level. READ MORE
