  1. 11. Population divergence at different spatial scales in a wide-spread amphibian

    Author : Patrik Rödin Mörch; Anssi Laurila; Jacob Höglund; Bengt Hansson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Adaptive divergence; environmental gradients; genomics; life-history; amphibians; Biologi med inriktning mot zooekologi; Biology with specialization in Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : To study the distribution of genetic and phenotypic variation in different environments and at different spatial scales is important in order to understand the process of local adaptation and how populations will respond to future climate change. In my thesis I study populations of moor frogs (Rana arvalis) at different spatial scales, first along a 1700 km latitudinal gradient (Paper I, II, IV) and, second, in a system of inter-connected wetlands (III, IV). 2. 12. Advances in studying the role of genetic divergence and recombination in adaptation in non-model species

    Author : Ramprasad Neethiraj; Christopher Wheat; Sören Nylin; Mathieu Joron; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Recombination; Genetic divergence; Lepidoptera; Genetic variation; Genetic diversity; Holocentric chromosomes; cis-regulatory variation; Allele-specific expression; populationsgenetik; Population Genetics;

    Abstract : Understanding the role of genetic divergence and recombination in adaptation is crucial to understanding the evolutionary potential of species since they can directly affect the levels of genetic variation present within populations or species. Genetic variation in the functional parts of the genome such as exons or regulatory regions is the raw material for evolution, because natural selection can only operate on phenotypic variation already present in the population. 3. 13. Island biogeography and population divergence in the Skyros wall lizard

    Author : Anna Runemark; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Podarcis gaigeae; inbreeding; predation release; polymorphism; island gigantism; the island rule; genetic drift; sexual selection; natural selection; island biology; Evolution;

    Abstract : Islands are cradles for new biodiversity and provide natural laboratories for the study of population divergence. In my thesis, I investigated the role of different evolutionary processes in the population divergence in the Skyros wall lizard (Podarcis gaigeae), a species where islet populations have strongly diverged morphologies. 4. 14. Genome Divergence in Progress - a population genetic analysis of the allopolyploid Arabidopsis suecica and its maternal parent A. thaliana

    Author : Mattias Jakobsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cytogenetik; Genetik; cytogenetics; Genetics; sequence polymorphism; microsatellites; population structure; polyploidy; single origin; Arabidopsis thaliana; Arabidopsis suecica; genome evolution; evolutionary history; Plant genetics; Växtgenetik;

    Abstract : The evolutionary history of the allotetraploid Arabidopsis suecica and its maternal parent Arabidopsis thaliana is analyzed in the thesis in terms of genetic variation in the natural populations of the two species. The earliest phase of the speciation event in which the genomes of A. thaliana and A. READ MORE

  5. 15. Ecology across Boundaries : Food web coupling among and within ecosystems

    Author : Pia Bartels; Peter Eklöv; Lars J. Tranvik; Daniel E. Schindler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cross-ecosystem; food web; habitat coupling; terrestrial-aquatic linkages; subsidy; allochthonous; lake ecosystem; population divergence; trait variation; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestrisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi; Biology; Biologi; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi; Biology with specialization in Limnology;

    Abstract : Cross-boundary movements of energy and material are ubiquitous. Freshwater ecosystems receive nutrients, dissolved, and particulate organic matter from adjacent terrestrial ecosystems, whereas terrestrial ecosystems mainly receive prey organisms and detritus deposited by physical processes such as floods from freshwater ecosystems.
