1. Helminths and immunity against tuberculosis
Abstract : The efficacy of Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG) is low and incidence of tuberculosis (TB) is high in those areas where helminths are endemic. Protection against tuberculosis requires strong cell mediated immunity while chronic helminth infections induce responses characterized by dominant Th2 responses as well as up-regulated regulatory T cell activity. 2. Structure-Based Virtual Screening : New Methods and Applications in Infectious Diseases
Abstract : A drug discovery project typically starts with a pharmacological hypothesis: that the modulation of a specific molecular biological mechanism would be beneficial in the treatment of the targeted disease. In a small-molecule project, the next step is to identify hits, i.e. molecules that can effect this modulation. READ MORE

3. Immunological aspects of latent tuberculosis infection during pregnancy
Abstract : Pregnancy-induced immune modulation might lead to reactivation of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). This thesis explores aspects of immune-based LTBI diagnostics and how pregnancy affects the immune control of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection. We studied a prospective cohort of women recruited during pregnancy in Ethiopia. READ MORE

4. Clinical and prophylactic studies of human tuberculosis in a low-endemic setting
Abstract : Sweden is a low burden country for tuberculosis (TB). New cases occur mainly among immigrants from countries with a higher TB prevalence. Most persons infected with TB (latent TB) will not develop disease (active TB). Prolonged treatment is necessary and can cause severe adverse drug reactions. READ MORE

5. Improving treatment outcomes for patients with pulmonary tuberculosis in Tanzania : host and pathogen factors
Abstract : Tuberculosis (TB) causes more than 1.2 million deaths each year globally. Yet, survivors of tuberculosis are left with long term sequelae of chronic inflammatory responses with consequent reduced quality of life. READ MORE
