  1. 1. Characterization of the MRI patient exposure environment and exposure assessment methods for magnetic fields in MRI scanners

    Author : Jennifer Frankel; Jonna Wilén; Anders Garpebring; Johan Olsrud; Peter Lundberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; electromagnetic fields; exposure assessment; magnetic resonance imaging; switched gradient fields; radiofrequency fields; exposure metrics; radiofysik; radiation physics;

    Abstract : Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become one of the most common imaging modalities available in modern medicine, and it is an indispensable diagnostic tool thanks to the unparalleled soft-tissue contrast and high image resolution. It is also a unique exposure environment consisting of a complex mix of magnetic fields. READ MORE

  2. 2. Cold Sensitivity in injured and normal hands. Consequences for daily life

    Author : Ingela Carlsson; Malmö Handkirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Behavioural treatment; cold sensitivity; Cold Intolerance Symptom Severity questionnaire; cold intolerance; Cold Sensitivity Severity scale; hand injury; health-related quality of life; hand-arm vibration syndrome; occupation; Potential Work Exposure Scale;

    Abstract : Cold sensitivity is a common and persistent complaint after various hand injuries and diseases. The general aim of the thesis was to investigate the consequences of cold sensitivity for daily life in patients with traumatic hand injuries and hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). READ MORE

  3. 3. Psychotropic Pharmaceuticals in Aquatic Systems: An Ecological Perspective

    Author : Melanie Hedgespeth; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ecotoxicology; aquatic; trophic level; pharmaceutical; SSRI; beta-blocker; sertraline; fluoxetine; propranolol; fish; daphnia; snail; predator; prey; behavior; life history; multiple stressor;

    Abstract : Psychotropic pharmaceuticals have been shown to exert a variety of sublethal effects on non-target organisms, even at low concentrations found in the environment (ng/L to µg/L); hence, the aim of my research has been to determine the individual-level effects of psychotropic pharmaceuticals (the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors sertraline and fluoxetine, and the β-blocker propranolol) on behavioral and life history traits in freshwater organisms. Further, this research was directed towards assessing the potential large-scale impacts of these effects on population growth and predator-prey interactions (with community-level implications) via the application of traditional, ecological concepts and models. 4. 4. Optically Stimulated Luminescence for Retrospective Radiation Dosimetry. The Use of Materials Close to Man in Emergency Situations

    Author : Therése Geber-Bergstrand; Malmö Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Keywords : Retrospective dosimetry; Emergency dosimetry; OSL;

    Abstract : If an accident or attack involving radiological or nuclear material were to happen, people from the general public would be at risk of exposure to ionising radiation. Unlike people working with ionising radiation, for whom level of exposure to radiation is constantly monitored with dosemeters, people from the general population do not wear dosemeters; thus, the dose estimations for these individuals must be performed using alternative methods. 5. 5. Protein Surfaces Probed by Aqueous Two-phase Partitioning

    Author : Kristina Berggren; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Metabolism; partitioning; Aqueous two-phase systems; protein surface; peptide; Biochemistry; amino acid residue; Biokemi;

    Abstract : This thesis is concerned primarily with peptide and protein partitioning in aqueous two-phase systems and the connection between partitioning behavior and protein structure. The surface properties of a protein is often crucial for recognition and interaction with other molecules. READ MORE
