  1. 1. Reduction of refining energy during mechanical pulping : using pressurised chip compression and sulphite pre-treatment

    Author : Erik Nelsson; Geoffrey Daniel; Mittuniversitetet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Chip pre-treatment; double disc refiner; energy efficiency; Impressafiner; low dosage; Norway spruce; refining intensity; single disc refiner; sulphite pre-treatment; thermomechanical pulp;

    Abstract : The effects of pressurised compressive chip pre-treatment and low dosage sulphite pre-treatment were evaluated for production of thermomechanical pulp in mill scale trials using Norway spruce (Picea abies) at the Braviken paper mill (Holmen Paper AB, Sweden). The general aim of the study was to improve the energy efficiency during the production of mechanical pulps suitable for news and improved news grade papers. READ MORE

  2. 2. Enhancing Composite Cassava Bread Quality - Effect of cassava pre-treatment and baking improvers

    Author : Maria Eduardo; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; baking improvers; bread quality; cassava flour; pre-treatment; composite bread; sensory evaluation;

    Abstract : Due to unfavourable climatic conditions, the production of wheat in Mozambique is not sufficient to satisfy national food industrial needs and substantial quantities must be imported at high cost. Bread is currently produced basically using wheat flour. READ MORE

  3. 3. Pre-treatment of substrates for anaerobic digestion : potential and development needs

    Author : My Carlsson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []

    Abstract : Substrate pre-treatment has been gaining interest in anaerobic digestion (AD) as a means to increase biogas yields with nowadays more diversified substrate sources. The objective of this thesis is to identify improvement potentials and development needs within applications of substrate pretreatment in anaerobic digestion (AD) based on literature and specific examples, with special focus on the impact assessment and exemplified by the case of electroporation(EP) pre-treatment. 4. 4. Improving physical flows in biomass-to-energy supply chains by means of pre-treatment technology and coordination

    Author : Martin Svanberg; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; pre-treatment technology; torrefaction and coordination; supply chain; biomass-to-energy; physical flow; logistics;

    Abstract : AbstractThe transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy sources such as biomass-to-energy (B2E) is an environmentally sustainable pathway. However, increased use of biomass is hampered by the high costs of logistics activities within the physical flow. READ MORE

  5. 5. Biomass Pre-treatment for the Production of Sustainable Energy : Emissions and Self-ignition

    Author : Katarina Rupar-Gadd; Mehri Sanati; Evert Ljungström; Växjö universitet; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; terpenes; SPME; biomass; pellets; self-ignition; storage; drying; calorimetry; Chemical engineering; Kemiteknik; Bioteknik; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : Organic emissions with focus on terpenes, from biomass drying and storage were investigated by Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) and GC-FID and GC-MS. The remaining terpenes in the biomass (Spruce and pine wood chips) after drying were dependant on the drying temperature and drying medium used. READ MORE
