  1. 1. Biodiversity in environmental assessment : tools for impact prediction

    Author : Mikael Gontier; Berit Balfors; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Environmental technology; Environmental impact assessment; Strategic environmental assessment; Biodiversity assessment; Prediction tools; GIS; GIS-base ecological models; Miljöteknik; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Abstract : Urbanisation and infrastructure developments impact on the surrounding natural environment and threaten biodiversity. The fragmentation of natural habitats in particular is a major obstacle for the preservation of biodiversity in a long-term perspective. READ MORE

  2. 2. Transmembrane Proteins and Protein Structure Prediction : What we can learn from Computational Methods

    Author : John Lamb; Arne Elofsson; Paolo Marcatili; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; protein structure prediction; contact prediction; transmembrane protein; topology prediction; machine learning; Biochemistry towards Bioinformatics; biokemi med inriktning mot bioinformatik;

    Abstract : A protein’s 3D-structure is essential to understand how proteins function and interact and how biochemical processes proceed in organic life. Despite the advancement in experimental methods, it remains expensive and time-consuming to determine protein structure experimentally. READ MORE

  3. 3. Population-based prediction of atrial fibrillation

    Author : Gustav Smith; Kardiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; atrial fibrillation; prediction; epidemiology; genetics; natriuretic peptide; heart failure;

    Abstract : Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia and increases in prevalence. As AF confers increased risk of morbidity, stroke, dementia and mortality, a major objective of cardiovascular epidemiology today is the development of tools for prediction and prevention of AF and its consequences. 4. 4. A Study in RNA Bioinformatics : Identification, Prediction and Analysis

    Author : Eva Freyhult; David Ardell; Robert Giegerich; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; RNA; bioinformatics; secondary structure; structure prediction; dynamic programming; energy landscape; homology search; sequence logo; tRNA; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik;

    Abstract : Research in the last few decades has revealed the great capacity of the RNA molecule. RNA, which previously was assumed to play a main role only as an intermediate in the translation of genes to proteins, is today known to play many important roles in the cell in addition to that as a messenger RNA and transfer RNA, including the ability to catalyze reactions and gene regulations at various levels. 5. 5. Vibrations in Lightweight Buildings - Perception and Prediction

    Author : Juan Negreira; Teknisk akustik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Psycho-vibratory evaluation; Vibrations; Timber floors; Lightweight; Measurements; Serviceability criteria; Vibration annoyance; Vibration acceptability; Elastomer; Finite element method; Prediction Tools.;

    Abstract : When the Swedish construction code (in 1994) allowed wooden multi-storey buildings to be built, this type of lightweight construction became popular due to its low cost and ease of construction, and also because wood is a plentiful resource in Sweden. Drawbacks in such buildings are disturbing vibrations and noise propagating in the construction, especially through junctions. READ MORE
