1. Physiological Stress Reactivity in Late Pregnancy
Abstract : During pregnancy, the basal activity is increased in both of our major stress response systems: the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. At the same time, the reactivity towards stressors is reduced. These alterations sustain maternal and fetal homeostasis, and are involved in the regulation of gestational length. READ MORE

2. Metabolic Significance of Systemic DHA Deficiency
Abstract : Fatty acid composition in the body displays a high level of heterogeneity and can rapidly respond to changes in diet regime or to starvation. Homeostasis of the level of certain fatty acids is an important factor for maintenance of structural integrity as well as for proper signaling within the organism. READ MORE

3. Transport of sodium and protons in the human placenta. Mechanisms in normal pregnancy and alterations in intrauterine growth restriction
Abstract : The syncytiotrophoblast cell of the human placenta represents the interface between maternal and fetal blood supplies. This polarized epithelium consists of a maternal facing microvillous membrane (MVM) opposing a fetal facing basal membrane (BM). This unique syncytial cell is responsible for transfer of all nutrients to the developing fetus. READ MORE

4. Blood pressure, renal functional and structural changes, in normal and preeclamptic pregnancy
Abstract : The kidneys play a pivotal role in the adaptive physiology of the pregnant woman, presenting some changes at term similar to the changes found in preeclampsia – a state of increased risk of fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality. The aim of these investigations was to explore possible similarities in blood pressure regulation, renal function and structure in normal term and preeclamptic pregnancy, to ascertain whether both conditions in fact are different degrees of an adaptive process in reaction to pregnancy. 5. Localization of lipoprotein lipase in mouse pancreas, kidney and placenta : impact of metabolic disturbances on cellular distribution and activity regulation
Abstract : Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) is the key enzyme for metabolism of triglycerides in plasma lipoproteins. In recent years many new facts about the enzyme and its regulation have been uncovered. The endothelial membrane protein GPIHBP1 translocates LPL through endothelial cells and holds the enzyme in place at the luminal side of the capillary endothelium. READ MORE
