  1. 1. Reduced Preoperative Fasting in Children

    Author : Hanna Andersson; Peter Frykholm; Mark Thomas; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Fasting; Children; Preoperative; Pulmonary Aspiration; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care;

    Abstract : Preoperative fasting is recommended in order to reduce the risk of perioperative pulmonary aspiration. However, preoperative fasting may have negative effects on patient wellbeing and homeostasis. READ MORE

  2. 2. Acute Confusional State in Elderly Patients with Hip Fracture. Identification of risk factors and intervention using a prehospital and perioperative management program

    Author : Karin Björkman Björkelund; Institutionen för hälsovetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; postoperative confusion; mortality; pain; fasting; hypoxemia; complications; ASA; Anemia; transfusion.; anesthesia;

    Abstract : Abstract The overall aim of this thesis was to increase knowledge about underlying causes and perioperative risk factors of Acute Confusional State (ACS) in elderly patients with hip fracture and to investigate the effect of a multi-factorial intervention program in order to decrease the number of patients who develop ACS. The aim in paper I was to describe elderly patients with hip fracture on the basis of the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ ASA classification system and to identify preoperative risk factors in relation to the postoperative outcome measured up to 4-months after surgery. 3. 3. The sites and mechanisms of postoperative insulin resistance

    Author : Jonas Nygren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Surgery; Insulin resistance; Glucosemetabolism; Glucose clamping technique; Gastric emptying; Immobilization; Preoperative fasting; ICF-I; Hospital stay; Stableisotopes ISBN 9;

    Abstract : In Sweden with nine million inhabitants, 450,000 operations (outpatients excluded) are performed every year resulting in 2,250,000 treatment days in hospital. Surgical operations are part of the treatment for 44% of all patients admitted to hospital care occupying 24% of all hospital beds. READ MORE

  4. 4. Aspects of ERAS-care pathways within colo-rectal surgery

    Author : Ulf Gustafsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Almost half of all in-patients in Sweden are treated with surgery. Fast postoperative recovery is important not only for each patient undergoing surgery but also from a health economical perspective. Within traditional care, the rate of postoperative recovery after major abdominal surgery has been slow with high morbidity and long hospital stays. READ MORE

  5. 5. Perioperative nutrition and insulin resistance

    Author : Monika Svanfeldt; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Insulin sensitivity; insulin resistance; hyperinsulinaemic normoglycaemic clamps; wholebody glucose kinetics; whole-body protein kinetics; indirect calorimetry; surgery; carbohydrate loading; hypocaloric nutrition; bed rest and TPN;

    Abstract : Surgical trauma induces a catabolic response with development of insulin resistance as a central and well-characterised feature. In insulin resistance, the stimulating effect of insulin on peripheral glucose uptake and the suppressing effect of insulin on endogenous glucose release are decreased, resulting in hyperglycaemia.
