  1. 1. Sludge-derived char : utilisation as a metal sorbent in dilute wastewaters

    Author : Ida Sylwan; Eva Thorin; Lena Johansson Westholm; Konrad Koch; Mälardalens universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; sorption; adsorption; sludge; biosolids; metal; wastewater treatment; sorption; adsorption; slam; metaller; avloppsvattenrening; Energy- and Environmental Engineering; energi- och miljöteknik;

    Abstract : Metal concentrations in soil and water have increased since the Industrial Revolution, which may have negative health and environmental effects. Metal pollution occurs, for instance, in municipal wastewater, industrial wastewater, and stormwater. Concentrations are often low, due to dilution. A common technology for metal removal is sorption. 2. 2. Increase of Biogas Production at Wastewater Treatment Plants Addition of urban organic waste and pre-treatment of sludge

    Author : Åsa Davidsson; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; kontroll av utsläpp; pollution control; Miljöteknik; Environmental technology; Miljöstudier; Environmental studies; biogas; anaerobic digestion; sludge; Wastewater; organic waste; methane;

    Abstract : Anaerobic digestion of organic matter results in the production of biogas, which can be used to replace fossil fuels. There is potential for increased biogas production at wastewater treatment plants by digesting urban organic waste either separately or together with the sludge. Biogas production could also be increased by sludge pre-treatment. READ MORE

  3. 3. Anaerobic digestion in the kraft pulp and paper industry : Challenges and possibilities for implementation

    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Pulp and paper; anaerobic digestion; fibre sludge; activated sludge; condensates; bleaching wastewater; wastewater treatment; methane; degradability; nutrient recirculation; Pappers- och massa; anaerob nedbrytning; fiberslam; aktivt slam; kondensat; vattenrening; metan; nedbrytbarhet; näringsåterföring;

    Abstract : The pulp and paper industry is a large producer of wastewater and sludge, putting high pressure on waste treatment. In addition, more rigorous environmental legislation for pollution control and demands to increase the use of renewable energy have put further pressure on the pulp and paper industry’s waste treatment, where anaerobic digestion (AD) and the production of methane could pose a solution. 4. 4. Sorption and transformation of polar pharmaceuticals during wastewater treatment studied by hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction

    Author : Estelle Larsson; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; pharmaceuticals; wastewater treatment; sludge; hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses the application of hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction as a simple, efficient and environmentally friendly tool to study the fate of four common anti-inflammatory drugs (ketoprofen, naproxen, diclofenac and ibuprofen) during wastewater treatment. Initial experiments verified that this technique is applicable on aqueous as well as suspensions of solid samples, thus greatly simplifying the sample preparation. READ MORE

  5. 5. Carbon utilisation for extended nitrogen removal and resource savings

    Author : Tobias Hey; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; primary sludge hydrolysis; carbon source; energy; resources; denitrification; environment; economy; volatile fatty acids; multiple pH point titration; wastewater treatment; activated sludge simulation.;

    Abstract : A full-scale in-line primary sludge hydrolysis experiment was conducted in one out of four primary settlers at the Klagshamn Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) to test if the wastewater quality can be improved in terms of providing easily accessible carbon for possible pre-denitrification and the reduction of external carbon sources. The amount of easily accessible carbon produced, in the form of the volatile fatty acid (VFA), alkalinity and ammonium concentrations, was measured throughout the entire full-scale experiment at the outlet of the hydrolysis tank and that of the ordinary primary settler, which served as a reference line.
