1. Biophysical studies of membrane interacting peptides derived from viral and Prion proteins
Abstract : This thesis focuses on peptides derived from the Prion, Doppel and Influenza haemagglutinin proteins in the context of bilayer interactions with model membranes and live cells. The studies involve spectroscopic techniques like fluorescence, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS), circular and linear dichroism (CD and LD), confocal fluorescence microscopy and NMR. 2. Interactions of Prion Proteins and PrP-derived Peptides in Scrapie infection
Abstract : Prion diseases are fatal and incurable spongiform encephalopathies that occur amongst mammals. The central pathological event is the misfolding of the cellular prion protein (PrPC) into an amyloid, neurotoxic isoform called scrapie (PrPSc). PrPSc is the main, or sole, constituent of infectious prions. READ MORE

3. Cell-penetrating peptides in model membrane systems : Interaction, structure induction and membrane effects
Abstract : Despite continuing advances in the development of macromolecules, including peptides, proteins, and oligonucleotides, for therapeutic purposes, the successful application of these hydrophilic molecules has so far been hampered by their inability to efficiently traverse the plasma membrane. The discovery of a class of peptides (cell-penetrating peptides, CPPs) with the ability to mediate the non-invasive and efficient import of a whole host of cargoes, both in vitro and in vivo, has provided a new means by which the problem associated with cellular delivery can be circumvented. 4. Structure and Dynamics of Membrane Associated Peptides
Abstract : The peptide-membrane interaction is a key element for many biological functions, from cell signaling to cell internalization. In this thesis the peptide-membrane interaction of six different peptides have been studied with respect to their structure, membrane location and dynamics with spectroscopic methods. READ MORE

5. Naturally derived cell-penetrating peptides and applications in gene regulation : A study on internalization mechanisms and endosomal escape
Abstract : Cell-penetrating peptides are a class of peptides which have achieved a lot of recognition due to their vector abilities. Since their discovery over a decade ago, there has been an uncertainty concerning the mechanism by which they are internalized into the cells. READ MORE
