    Abstract : Background: With an estimated number of 1.2 billion in the world, adolescents represent a major transformative force in global health. Optimum adolescent nutrition is increasingly important for scaling up population health gains in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) of South Asia. READ MORE

  2. 2. Adolescent nutrition in rural Bangladesh : Studies on diet, cardiometabolic indicators, physical activity and fitness in the MINIMat cohort

    Author : Mohammad Redwanul Islam; Eva-Charlotte Ekström; Syed Moshfiqur Rahman; Lauren Lissner; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; dietary patterns; ultra-processed foods; rural adolescents; low- and middle-income countries; Bangladesh; cardiometabolic risk; accelerometry; fitness;

    Abstract : Adolescent nutrition is crucial for curbing non-communicable disease burden among transitioning populations in resource-limited settings. This thesis explored the gender and socio-economic stratification of diet, physical activity (PA) and fitness, and the relationship of these modifiable dimensions of nutrition with cardiometabolic risk among adolescents of a birth cohort in rural Bangladesh. 3. 3. Antioxidants in Andean food and meals

    Author : Leslie Tejeda; Livsmedelsteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Antioxidant capacity; polyphenolic compounds; anthocyanidins; individual food; meals; ans and stan genes;

    Abstract : Abstract The constant need to improve health and to prevent disease in Bolivia, especially in the Andean region with its extreme environmental conditions (high altitude and lower temperatures), motivated us to extend studies of antioxidant sources in foods and plants, since antioxidants are believed to have major health benefits. Spectrophotometric methods, such as ABTS (2, 2’- azinobis-3-ethylbenzotiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and FRAP (ferric reduction antioxidant power), were used to evaluate antioxidant activity. READ MORE

  5. 5. Diet and gastrointestinal cancer : one-carbon metabolism and other aspects

    Author : Susanna C Larsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Diet has been hypothesized to play a major role in the etiology of gastrointestinal cancer, but the specific dietary factors involved remain unclear. The aims of this thesis were: to examine the associations of dietary magnesium and vitamin B6 intakes with risk of colorectal cancer in the Swedish Mammography Cohort (SMC); to evaluate the relation between folate intake and risk of pancreatic cancer in the SMC and the Cohort of Swedish Men (COSM); to use metaanalysis to summarize the evidence from published studies of the associations of folate intake and polymorphisms in the gene encoding 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR C677T and A1298C), a central enzyme in one-carbon metabolism, with risk of esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, and colorectal cancer; and to perform a meta-analysis of epidemiologic studies of the relationship between processed meat consumption and risk of gastric cancer.
