1. Biorefining of lignocellulose : Detoxification of inhibitory hydrolysates and potential utilization of residual streams for production of enzymes
Abstract : Lignocellulosic biomass is a renewable resource that can be utilized for the production of biofuels, chemicals, and bio-based materials. Biochemical conversion of lignocellulose to advanced biofuels, such as cellulosic ethanol, is generally performed through microbial fermentation of sugars generated by thermochemical pretreatment of the biomass followed by an enzymatic hydrolysis of the cellulose. 2. Chemical characterization in the biorefinery of lignocellulose : Formation and management of oxalic acid and analysis of feedstocks for bioethanol production
Abstract : The pulp and paper industry is entering a new era. Pulp mills will be transformed to biorefineries that produce not only pulp, but also biofuels and novel products from lignocellulose. This thesis addresses problems connected with the industrial transition to environmental-friendly technologies and the implementation of the biorefinery concept. READ MORE

3. Production and investigation of highly thermophilic multi-domain carbohydrate-active enzymes
Abstract : With the looming threat of climate change caused largely by an excess of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, recent scientific efforts have focused on the substitution of fossil fuels and other polluting compounds with more environmentally conscious choices. To this end, the investigation of biomass as both a renewable source of energy and as a chemical basis to produce high-value products is being extensively investigated. READ MORE

4. Ethanol from lignocellulose : Management of by-products of hydrolysis
Abstract : Fuel ethanol can be produced from lignocellulosic materials, such as residues from agriculture and forestry. The polysaccharides of lignocellulose are converted to sugars by hydrolysis and the sugars can then be fermented to ethanol using microorganisms. However, during hydrolysis a wide range of by-products are also generated. READ MORE

5. Modeling of enzyme kinetics on polymeric substrates by simulation : Enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose
Abstract : Biopolymers are an essential constituent of living matter. To develop new products and processes based on enzyme production and modification and hydrolysis of biopolymers, enzymes with well understood mechanism are required. It is impossible to derive a universal analytical model for every particular enzyme/polymer system. READ MORE
