    Abstract : Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a potentially curative treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) with now more than 600 documented cases in the medical literature. Long-term remission can be achieved with this therapy, but when is it justified to claim that a patient is cured from MS? In attempt to answer this question, the outcome of the Swedish patients is described, mechanisms behind the therapeutic effect are discussed and new tools for demonstration of absence of disease have been developed. 2. 2. Diagnostic, prognostic and management aspects of different types of multiple sclerosis

    Author : Petra Nilsson; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; optic neuritis; multiple sclerosis; cerebrospinal fluid; magnetic resonance imaging; prognosis; cognition; diagnosis; primary progressive multiple sclerosis; tumefactive MS; craniectomy;

    Abstract : Background: The aim in the thesis is to study diagnostic issues, clinical features, therapy, and prognosis in selected demyelinative disorders of the nervous system: optic neuritis (ON), primary progressive MS (PPMS), and tumefactive MS (a very rare acute demyelinating disorder). Methods: From an initial cohort of 110 patients with ON collected 19 to 31 years ago, a new follow-up survey was conducted in 50 patients who on a previous follow up had not developed MS. READ MORE

  3. 3. Innate immunity in progressive multiple sclerosis

    Author : Shahin Aeinehband; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Multiple sclerosis is (MS) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease of central nervous system (CNS) leading to demyelination, axonal damage and neurological handicap, often affecting young adults. A majority of patients with MS initiate their disease with clinical bouts and relapses, but with time convert to a progressive course with dampened signs of CNS inflammation but increasing neurological deficits. 4. 4. Towards an Earlier Detection of Progressive Multiple Sclerosis using Metabolomics and Machine Learning

    Author : Stephanie Herman; Kim Kultima; Ola Spjuth; Joachim Burman; Johan Lengqvist; Camilla Svensson; Gabi Kastenmüller; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bioinformatics; biomarkers; progressive multiple sclerosis; metabolomics; machine learning; advanced analytics; mass spectrometry;

    Abstract : Decision-making guided by advanced analytics is becoming increasingly common in many fields. Implementing computationally driven healthcare solutions does, however, pose ethical dilemmas as it involves human health. READ MORE

  5. 5. Immunogenetic studies of multiple sclerosis

    Author : Arturs Ligers; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Multiple sclerosis; CTLA-4; HLA-A2; HLA-A3; HLA-DRB1*15; HLA-DRB1*;

    Abstract : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory, demyelinating and neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system (CNS). Several genetic factors are likely to be of importance for MS rather than one factor. READ MORE
