11. Inducible nitric oxide synthase in experimental urinary tract infection
Abstract : Urinary tract infection (UTI) is among the most common bacterial infections in humans and the majority are caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli). Abundant evidence indicates that nitric oxide (NO) produced by the inducible NO synthase (iNOS) plays an important role in host defense against infection. READ MORE

12. Conctraction-mediating receptors in human peripheral vessels with special reference to veins and lymphatics
Abstract : By means of a myograph, postjunctional alpha-adrenoceptors were characterized in human superficial epigastric arteries and veins obtained from health subjects. The rank order of potency of subtype selective agonists could not be used for receptor characterization in these vessels, whereas antagonists gave distinct results. READ MORE

13. Lipid peroxidation in vivo : Evaluation and application of methods for measurement
Abstract : Lipid peroxidation is thought to be an important factor in the pathophysiology of a number of diseases and in the process of ageing, but its measurement in vivo has been difficult. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate methods for measurement of lipid peroxidation in vivo that are suitable for clinical investigations, and to apply these methods in animal and human studies investigating basal conditions and situations associated with increased lipid peroxidation. 14. Prostaglandins and angiogenesis in experimental cancer
Abstract : Background and aim. Genes, proteins and pathways have been identified and suggested as potential targets in tumor angiogenesis, but current anti-angiogenic therapies have provided only modest benefits in survival of cancer patients. READ MORE

15. Inflammation modulating effects of prostaglandins and omega-3 fatty acids
Abstract : Omega-(omega6) and omega-3 fatty acids (FA) and their metabolites (eikosanoids, such as prostaglandins, PG) are important modulators of immune and inflammatory responses in various ways. The aim of this thesis was to assess some in vitro and ex vivo effects of these lipids on blood leukocytes. READ MORE
