  1. 1. Viperin vs. tick-borne encephalitis virus : mechanism of a potent antiviral protein

    Author : Kirstin Vonderstein; Anna Överby Wernstedt; Magnus Evander; Sonja Best; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Tick-borne encephalitis virus; TBEV; type-I interferon; IFN; Interferon-stimulated gene; ISG; viperin; GBF1; CIAO1; antiviral protein; genome replication; particle release; capsid;

    Abstract : Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a very important virus medically, causing mild or severe encephalitis often with long-lasting sequelae. Treatment of tick-borne encephalitis is limited to supportive care, and antiviral drugs are much needed.The type-I interferon (IFN) system is the first line of host defense against many viruses. 2. 2. Microgel Interactions with Peptides and Proteins : Consequence of Peptide and Microgel Properties

    Author : Ronja Widenbring; Martin Malmsten; Per Hansson; Catherine Picart; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Binding; Degradation; Enzyme; Gel; Hydrogel; Microgel; Peptide; Protein; Release; Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry; Farmaceutisk fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Microgels are lightly cross-linked hydrogel particles in the sub-micrometer to micrometer size range with a capacity to drastically change their volume in response to changes in the external environment. Microgels have an ability to bind and store substances such as biomacromolecular drugs, notably proteins and peptides, and release them upon stimuli, making them potential candidates as drug delivery vehicles and functional biomaterials. 3. 3. Synthesis, Characterisation and Properties of Biomimetic Biodegradable Polymers

    Author : Fredrik Nederberg; Tim Bowden; Nicola Tirelli; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chemistry; biodegradable polymers; biomimetic; phospholipid-like; phosphorylcholine; amphiphilic; ionomer; hemocompatible; non-adhesive; water uptake; reduced protein adsorption; protein delivery; Kemi; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : The acceptance of blood contacting implants creating favorable conditions in vivo is decisively determined by their interaction with proteins that mediate inter cellular interactions with synthetic substrates. Adsorbed proteins can activate blood cascade systems like coagulation and complement that may result in serious blood clots, and/or immunological reactions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Response to mechanical loading in healing tendons

    Author : Pernilla Eliasson; Per Aspenberg; Anna Fahlgren; Michael Kjaer; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Ruptured tendons heal faster if they are exposed to mechanical loading. Loading creates deformation of the extracellular matrix and cells, which give rise to intracellular signalling, increased gene expression and protein synthesis. The effects of loading have been extensively studied in vitro, and in intact tendons in vivo. READ MORE

  5. 5. Defining the importance of protein geranylgeranylation in innate immunity

    Author : Murali K Akula; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CAAX proteins; GGTase-I; RAC1; statins;

    Abstract : RHO family proteins and other intracellular proteins are prenylated with a 20-carbon lipid—a product of the cholesterol synthesis pathway—by protein geranylgeranyltransferase type I (GGTase-I). Prenylation is widely believed to target proteins to membranes where they encounter effector molecules that stimulate GTP-binding and activation. READ MORE
