1. Evaluation of catfish by-products as protein sources for pigs in the Mekong Delta of Viet Nam
Abstract : The aim of this study was to evaluate preservation methods of catfish by-products (CBP), and the effects of replacing marine fish meal (FM) with these processing byproducts on diet digestibility, performance, feed efficiency and carcass quality in growing-finishing pigs. Paper I presents data on catfish production, processing and the nutritive value of catfish by-product meals (CBM) in the Mekong Delta (MD) of Vietnam. READ MORE

2. Evaluation of locally available feed resources for striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus)
Abstract : This thesis investigated and compared inputs and outputs, economic factors and current feed use in small-scale farming systems producing striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) in the Mekong Delta. The nutrient content of locally available natural feed resources for striped catfish was determined and growth performance, feed utilisation and body indices were analysed in pond-cultured striped catfish fed diets where fish meal protein was replaced with protein from local feed resources. 3. The mast cell transcriptome and the evolution of granule proteins and Fc receptors
Abstract : Protection against disease-causing pathogens, known as immunity, involves numerous cells organs, tissues and their products. To able to understand the biology of immune cells (hematopoietic cells) and their role in an immune system, we have used several different methods, including transcriptome analyses, bioinformatics, production of recombinant proteins and analyses of some of them, focusing on the granule proteases by substrate phage display. 4. Evaluation of local feed resources for hybrid catfish (Clarias macrocephalus x C. gariepinus) in smallholder fish farming systems in central Vietnam
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to examine the current feeding situation for fresh water fish in Central Vietnam, to evaluate the potential nutritive value of locally available feed resources for hybrid catfish (Clarias macrocephalus x C. gariepinus) and Nile tilapia, to determine the dietary requirement of lysine for hybrid catfish, to estimate the requirements for the other essential amino acids (EAA) by using ideal protein concept, and finally to evaluate the suitability of cassava leaf meal and shrimp head meal as a partial replacement for fish meal in the diet, without or with lysine supplementation, for hybrid catfish fingerlings. 5. Evaluation of locally available feed resources for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Rwanda
Abstract : Aquaculture was introduced in Rwanda in the 1940s as an extensive pond-based system but the sector has gained in popularity during the past two decades, resulting in greater numbers of fish ponds and a corresponding increase in demand for quality fish feeds for sustainable aquaculture production. The aim of this thesis was to identify, sample and evaluate the nutritive value of some locally available feed ingredients that could be used by fish farmers producing Nile tilapia. READ MORE
