  1. 6. Functional aspects of tactile directional sensibility

    Author : Helena Backlund; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Human; directional sensibility; hairy skin; hemispherectomy; postural control; glabrous skin; fMRI; psychophysics;

    Abstract : Tactile directional sensibility, i.e. the ability to tell the movement direction of a moving tactile stimulus, depends on the parallel processing of spatiotemporal information and information about changes in the pattern of skin tension. READ MORE

  2. 7. On Perceived Exertion and its Measurement

    Author : Elisabet Borg; Birgitta Berglund; Ana Garriga-Trillo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Perceptual scaling; psychophysics; Category-Ratio scale; perceived exertion; interindividual comparisons; Psychology; Psykologi; psykologi; Psychology;

    Abstract : The general aim of the thesis is to answer questions on general and differential aspects of perceived exertion and on the measurement of its intensity variation. Overall perceived exertion is commonly treated as a unidemensional construct. This thesis also explores its multidimensional character. Four empirical studies are summarized (Study I-IV). READ MORE

  3. 8. Measuring the tactile sense: Cortical mechanisms and clinical applications of tactile direction discrimination

    Author : Linda Lundblad; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : AIC; diabetic neuropathy; DLPFC; fMRI; hairy skin; psychophysics; QST testing; somatosensory cortex; tactile direction discrimination;

    Abstract : Most of the studies aiming to investigate the human tactile sense are done on the glabrous skin. Still, there is a need for a quantitative method for evaluating nervous function of the hairy skin. READ MORE

  4. 9. Myopia control and peripheral vision

    Author : Petros Papadogiannis; Linda Lundström; Peter Unsbo; Nicola Logan; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; myopia; peripheral vision; psychophysics;

    Abstract : The rapid rise in myopia prevalence has caused an urgent need for effectivemyopia control interventions. This thesis investigates the role of theperipheral optics of the human eye in myopia progression. It was initiallybelieved that the axial elongation of the myopic eye is caused only by thedefocus signals presented to the central retina. READ MORE

  5. 10. Neural limits of visual resolution

    Author : Zoran Popovic; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cell separation; cortical magnification; detection; estimated receptive field; high-pass filtered optotypes; nyquist limit; psychophysics; resolution; ganglion cells;

    Abstract : Aims: The aim of this thesis was to formulate a model of retinal neural circuitry in humans based on morphological estimates of retinal cone and ganglion cell populations, to compare results based on this model to psychophysical measurements of visual resolution and identify the retinal neural factors that limit visual resolution.Materials & Methods: Total displacement of central ganglion cells from foveal cones was obtained by estimating the length of fibers of Henle in four human retinas along the nasal or vertical hemi-meridians.
