1. Packing effects in palladium(II) and platinum(II) compounds, X-ray crystallography
Abstract : This thesis focuses on i) the effect of packing on the molecular geometry ii) packing arrangements of neutral Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes iii) the trans influence in Pt(II) complexes iv) the differences in bonding in corresponding Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes and v) the geometry of Pd(II) complexes with potential catalytic properties. Detailed three-dimensional structural information at the atomic level can be obtained from X-ray crystallography. READ MORE

2. Model Systems for Metal - DNA Interactions. With a Focus on Anticancer Active Platinum(II) Complexes
Abstract : Reactions of trans-dicyanodichloroaurate(III) trans-dibromodicyanoaurate(III), trans-diamminedichlorogold(III), cis-diammine(aqua)chloroplatinum(II), cis-ammineaqua-(cyclohexylamine)chloroplatinum(II), chloro(terpyridine)platinum(II) and chloro-(diethylenetriaminepalldium(II) with dimethyl sulfide, thionucleosides, thionucleotides and thione- and guanine-containing 17-mer oligonucleotides have been investigated by use of conventional and high-pressure stopped-flow spectrophotometry and HPLC technique as a function of ionic strength, pH, temperature and pressure in aqueous solutions. The mechanism and rate of oxidation of dimethyl sulfide by gold(III) complexes depends on the concentration of free halide. READ MORE

3. Reactions of Model and Anticancer Active Platinum(IV/II) Complexes - A Kinetic and Mechanistic Study
Abstract : In this thesis reductions of model and anticancer active Pt(IV) complexes with thiols and ascorbic acid and substitution reactions of cisplatin and model Pt(II) complexes with S-donor nucleophiles (rescue agents) have been investigated using stopped-flow and UV/VIS spectrophotometry. Glutathione (GSH) reduction of the anticancer active Pt(IV) compounds t- and c-[PtCl4(cha)(NH3)] (cha = cyclohexylamine), t-[PtCl4(thiazole)(NH3)] and c-[PtCl4(NH3)2] at 25 oC was observed to be very fast. 4. Structure-Reactivity Correlations for Reactions of Palladium(II) and Platinum(IV) Complexes
Abstract : The kinetics and mechanism for substitution reactions on tetraaquapalladium(II) by an extended series of thioethers, a great number of carboxylic acids, and olefins have been studied by use of UV-VIS, stopped-flow, and high-pressure stopped-flow spectrophotometry and NMR spectroscopy. Second-order rate constants k and activation parameters (activation enthalpies, entropies, and volumes) for formation of monodentate 1:1 complexes have been determined. READ MORE

5. Interactions of Anticancer Active Platinum(II) Complexes with DNA
Abstract : The kinetics and mechanism for interactions of the anticancer active platinum(II) complexes cis-[PtCl2(NH3)2)], cis-[PtCl2(NH3)(c-C6H11NH2)], and trans-[PtCl2-(NH3)(quinoline)] with DNA have been studied using a combination of HPLC, circular dichroism (CD), UV/vis spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Reactions of the monoaqua forms (charge = +1) of these complexes with single-stranded DNA oligonucleotides, typically between 13-17 bases long, were found to depend on i) the composition of the reaction medium, ii) the exact nature and location of the platination target, and iii) on the DNA structure.
