  1. 1. Development of Methods to Investigate Pulmonary Arterial Smooth Muscle Cells under Hypoxia

    Author : Joel Wahl; Kerstin Ramser; Mikael Sjödahl; Fredrik Nikolajeff; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Experimentell mekanik; Experimental Mechanics;

    Abstract : Hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) is a physiological response to localized alveolarhypoxia that is intrinsic to the pulmonary circulation. By hypoxia-induced contractionof pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMCs), the pulmonary capillary bloodflow is redirected to alveolar areas of high oxygen partial pressure, thus maintaining theventilation-perfusion ratio. 2. 2. Pulmonary hypertension. Clinical and pathophysiological studies

    Author : Nedim Selimovic; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : Pulmonary hypertension; Echocardiography; Right heart catheterisation; Pulmonary vascular resistance; Pulmonary function tests; Lung transplantation; Mortality on the waiting list; Vascular remodelling; Growth substances; Inflammation; Endothelin;

    Abstract : Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a common abnormality, most often associated with various cardiopulmonary diseases. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a devastating pulmonary vascular disease characterised by the proliferation of endothelial, smooth-muscle cells and fibroblasts. READ MORE

  3. 3. PACAP and airway regulation with special reference to smooth muscle and neutrophils

    Author : Johan Kinhult; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; audiology; auditive system and speech; Otorinolaryngologi; audiologi; hörsel- och talorganen; Otorhinolaryngology; allergy; neutrophils; smooth muscle; PACAP; airway regulation;

    Abstract : The investigations focus on the neuropeptidepituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide and its effects on airway regulation, with emphasis on smooth muscle relaxation and neutrophil activation and migration. In the nasal mucosa, PACAP-containing nerve fibers were localized invascular smooth muscle and close to seromucous glands. READ MORE

  4. 4. Systemic sclerosis : vascular, pulmonary and immunological aspects

    Author : Grethe Neumann Andersen; Solbritt Rantapää Dahlqvist; Lucia Mincheva-Nilsson; Sören Jacobsen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Systemic sclerosis; interstitial lung disease; MMP-9; Th1 Th2; transcription factors; NO; iNOS; E-selectin; endothelium-dependent dilation; endothelium-independent dilation.; Rheumatology; Reumatologi;

    Abstract : In systemic sclerosis (SSc), interstitial lung disease (ILD) and engagement of the vascular system lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate, in a consecutively included cohort of SSc (limited and diffuse) patients (n = 33), the T cell cytokine profile driving the disease in ILD and to explore the role of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and its inhibitor: tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading process leading to fibrous scarring and honey combing. 5. 5. Multimodal applications in medical technology that utilize Raman spectroscopy

    Author : Joel Wahl; Kerstin Ramser; Mikael Sjödahl; Thomas Bocklitz; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Raman spectroscopy; Preprocessing; Pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells; Brain tumors; Experimentell mekanik; Experimental Mechanics;

    Abstract : Biology can often be explained by structures and interactions between molecules. It is therefore of importance for medical sciences that the chemical reactions and molecular compositions of biological samples can be measured. The purpose of this thesis is twofold. READ MORE
