  1. 11. Immunologic and genetic studies of rat adjuvant-induced arthritis

    Author : Åsa Jansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : arthritis; autoimmunity; adjuvant; incomplete Freund s adjuvant; squalene; quantitative trait locus;

    Abstract : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory joint disease with a multifactorial and largely unknown etiology. It is influenced by both environmental and genetic factors, and understanding of disease mechanisms and identification of disease-causing genes is hampered by the complex and polygenic nature of the disease. 2. 12. Genetic factors influencing susceptibility to intracellular infections

    Author : Fabio Sánchez; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Genetic susceptibility; leprosy; leishmaniasis; HIV; quantitative trait locus; linkage analysis; multigenic; severity.;

    Abstract : Genetics of susceptibility to infection is a complex trait in which many factors from the host, the parasite and the environment, interact to produce different clinical manifestations of disease. This thesis explores the relationship between the first infectious susceptibility gene ever cloned, SLC11A1 and the occurrence of intracellular infections (leprosy, leishmaniasis and HIV infection) in several populations of humans. 3. 13. Genetic dissection of multifactorial disease models in the rat

    Author : Hong Jiao; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Type 2 daibetes; Goto-Kakizaki rat; linkage analysis; quantitative trait locus; gene-gene interaction; mitochondrial sequence; parent-of-origin;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is characterized by two apparently distinct pathophysiologic defects - insulin resistance and a failure of the pancreatic Beta-cells to compensate for this resistance by appropriately increasing insulin secretion. There is strong evidence for an important role of genetics in both of these components. READ MORE

  4. 14. Molecular genetics of type 2 diabetes

    Author : Li Luosheng; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Type 2 diabetes; the Goto-Kakizaki rat; linkage analysis; quantitative trait locus; gene-gene interaction; high fat diet; disease progression; alternative splicing; comparative genomics.;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes is a common and chronic disease caused by interactions between genetic and environmental factors. The Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rat is a well-established genetic model of type 2 diabetes. READ MORE

  5. 15. Genomics of chicken domestication and feralisation

    Author : Martin Johnsson; Dominic Wright; Per Jensen; Dirk-Jan de Koning; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Domestication can serve as a study system of rapid evolutionary change with wide-ranging effects on traits in animals. The chicken was domesticated from the Red Junglefowl and has diverged in behaviour, morphology and life history traits. READ MORE
