  1. 21. Looking for arthritis regulating genes on mouse chromosome 6 & 14

    Author : Marjan Popovic; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease of the joints with a complex aetiology affected by largely unknown genetic and environmental factors. Since ~60% of susceptibility to RA is genetically inherited, one way to progress towards understanding of the disease is to identify the disease regulating genes. READ MORE

  2. 22. Mapping and fine-mapping of genetic factors affecting bovine milk composition

    Author : Sandrine Duchemin; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Bovine milk is an important source of nutrients in Western diets. Unraveling the genetic background of bovine milk composition by finding genes associated with milk-fat composition and non-coagulation of milk were the main goals of this thesis. In Chapter 1, a brief description of phenotypes and genotypes used throughout the thesis is given. READ MORE

  3. 23. Evolution of Flowering Time in the Tetraploid Capsella bursa-pastoris (Brassicaceae)

    Author : Tanja Slotte; Martin Lascoux; Ulf Lagercrantz; Juliette de Meaux; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biology; flowering time; homoeolog; hybridization; introgression; microarray; multiple origins; polyploid; QTL; Biologi;

    Abstract : Although polyploidy is believed to be a major source of evolutionary novelty, few studies have examined the genetic basis of phenotypic variation in wild polyploids. In this thesis I have studied the genetic basis of flowering time variation in the wild tetraploid crucifer Capsella bursa-pastoris, as well as the evolutionary history of this species. READ MORE

  4. 24. Genetic and epigenetic influence on oxidative phosphorylation, islet function and type 2 diabetes in humans

    Author : Anders H Olsson; Diabetes - epigenetik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type 2 Diabetes; Genetics; Epigenetics; Human Pancreatic Islets; Oxidative Phosphorylation; Insulin Secretion;

    Abstract : The prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is increasing worldwide. T2D is a heterogeneous disease caused by a complex interplay between multiple genetic, epigenetic and non-genetic factors. The disease is characterised by impaired insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells and insulin resistance in peripheral tissues. READ MORE

  5. 25. Studies on host-related pathogenesis of herpes simplex type-1 encephalitis in rat

    Author : Biborka Bereczky-Veress; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In order to explore the molecular mechanisms of Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE), a severe infection of the central nervous system (CNS) caused by Herpes simplex type 1 virus (HSV-1); a rat model resembling the human condition was characterized in the DA (Dark Agouti) strain. After injection into the whiskers’ area HSV-1 entered the CNS at the level of the brain stem via the trigeminal ganglion, subsequently spreading to the thalamus, cortex and olfactory bulb, leading to death at five days post infection (dpi).
