  1. 1. Quinine metabolism in man : emphasis on the 3-hydroxylation as a biomarker reaction for the activity of CYP3A4

    Author : Rajaa A Mirghani; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Quinine is one of the cinchona alkaloids and used in the treatment of severe forms of malaria. Formation of 3-hydroxyquinine is catalysed by cytochrome P-450 3A4 (CYP3A4), which is the enzyme involved in the metabolism of about 50% of all drugs in clinical use. READ MORE

  2. 2. Intake inhibition by neuropeptide Y

    Author : Ahmed A Ammar; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : This thesis is an attempt to elucidate some neuroendocrine concomitants to Anorexia Nervosa (AN), an eating disorder that develops in women. In particular, the thesis has examined the effect of neuropeptide Y (NPY) on food intake under experimental conditions in male and female rats. READ MORE

  3. 3. Development of Analytical Methods for the Determination of Antimalarials in Biological Fluids

    Author : Daniel Blessborn; Yngve Bergqvist; Anders Helander; Högskolan Dalarna; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Malaria; Chloroquine; Quinine; Sulfadoxine; Pyrimethamine; Mefloquine; Lumefantrine; Amodiaquine; Pyronaridine; Proguanil; Atovaquone; Sampling paper; Dried blood spots; Capillary blood; Antimalarial drugs; Solid-phase extraction; Liquid chromatography.; Chemistry;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to develop analytical methods for measuring antimalarial drugs in biological fluids. Solid phase extraction (SPE) was used for the enrichment and purification of the drugs. READ MORE

  4. 4. The interplay of ions in the stimulation of the pancreatic -cell

    Author : Michael Eberhardson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; diabetes; pancreatic β-cells; cytoplasmic calcium; oscillations; glucose; tetrodotoxin; tolbutamide; veratridine; tetraethylammonium; quinine; cesium; H2DIDS; furosemide; transients; microfluorometry; fura-2; MQAE; calcium channels; potassium channels; sodium channels; chloride channels; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : Glucose stimulation of insulin release is mediated by depolarisation of the pancreatic β-cells with accompanying entry of Ca2+ through voltage-dependent channels. An important feature of the glucose-induced depolarisation is its rhythmicity causing oscillations of the cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i), which trigger pulsatile release of insulin. 5. 5. Quinine as a model for the study of cochlear hearing loss in humans

    Author : Erik Berninger; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : cochlear function; hearing loss; inner ear; otoacoustic emissions; quinine; pharmacokinetics; pharmacodynamics;

    Abstract : Quinine has been used for centuries and is still recommended for the treatment of severe falciparum malaria and non-severe chloroquine-resistant malaria. Among its side effects is the concentration-dependent and reversible cochlear hearing loss. READ MORE
