1. Electronic structure and exchange interactions from ab initio theory : New perspectives and implementations
Abstract : In this thesis, the magnetic properties of several materials were investigated using first principle calculations. The ab initio method named real space linear muffin-tin orbitals atomic sphere approximation (RS-LMTO-ASA) was used to calculate the electronic structure and magnetic properties of bulk systems, surface and nanostructures adsorbed on surfaces. 2. Coherent Diffractive Imaging with X-ray Lasers
Abstract : The newly emerging technology of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) has the potential to revolutionise molecular imaging. XFELs generate very intense X-ray pulses and predictions suggest that they may be used for structure determination to atomic resolution even for single molecules. READ MORE

3. Microstructural, Residual Stress, and Thermal Shock Studies of Plasma Sprayed ZrO2-Based Thermal Barrier Coatings
Abstract : Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), with a thickness of 0.4 mm, are today extensively used on the hot parts of both stationary and flying jet engines. The purpose of the TBC is to protect the underlying material from high temperatures and severe thennal shock. READ MORE

4. Dis-placed Desires : Space and Sexuality in South African Literature
Abstract : This study provides a diachronic view of the interweaving of space and sexuality, their interdependency and mutually constitutive aspects, in seven South African English language novels from the early twentieth century until the first decade of the twenty-first century. A key contention is that it is precisely a co-constitutive depiction of space and sexuality that has arisen in this literature as a response to a socio-political climate which has exercised harsh regulation in these two areas. 5. Absorption Characteristics of Periodically Perforated Suspended Ceilings
Abstract : The sound absorption characteristics of resonant absorbers, implemented as perforated suspended inner ceilings attached with thin porous layers, are investigated. Several existing theories model the principal absorption mechanisms, but the interaction with the outer sound field influences the absorption in ways that can be modelled with new approaches.
