  1. 1. Co-evolution of the HIV-1 R5 phenotype and the viral envelope glycoproteins

    Author : Johanna Repits; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; envelope; R5; HIV-1; evolution;

    Abstract : To gain entry into target cells, HIV-1 binds to CD4 via the viral glycoprotein gp120. This interac-tion initiates a series of events including binding of a coreceptor, CCR5 and/or CXCR4, and ulti-mately leads to gp41-mediated fusion of the viral and cell membranes. READ MORE

  2. 2. Intrapatient evolution of HIV-1 in the context of coreceptor usage

    Author : Mattias Mild; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; coreceptor switch; Medicine human and vertebrates ; Medicin människa och djur ; biological cloning; R5-X4; coreceptor usage; glycosylation; recombination; HIV; evolution;

    Abstract : The variable region 1 to 3 (V1-V3) of the HIV-1 envelope plays an important role in coreceptor usage. Early in infection HIV- 1 is using CCR5 as coreceptor to enter target cells (R5 viruses) whereas viruses using CXCR4 as coreceptor (X4 viruses) may appear later in infection. READ MORE

  3. 3. Evolution of HIV-1 coreceptor use in relation to pathogenesis

    Author : Ingrid Karlsson; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; RANTES; higly active antiretroviral therapy; pathogenesis; lymphoid tissue; cehmokine receptor; biological phenotype; coreceptor; HIV-1; evolution;

    Abstract : HIV-1 uses the coreceptors CCR5 and/or CXCR4 in addition to CD4 to enter the host cell. CCR5-using HIV-1 (R5 phenotype) appears to transmit infection and usually dominates the early stages of disease. READ MORE

  4. 4. Recombinant CXCR4/CCR5 hybrid receptors as tools for studies of HIV-1 receptor usage

    Author : Liselotte Antonsson; Drug Target Discovery; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicin människa och djur ; evolution; pathogenesis; cerebrospinal fluid; Medicine human and vertebrates ; TAK-779; RANTES; CXCR4; CCR5; coreceptor; GPCR; HIV-1;

    Abstract : The chemokine receptors CCR5 and CXCR4 are required, together with CD4, for the entry of HIV-1 into target cells. CCR5 using HIV-1 dominates during transmission and the asymptomatic phase of infection. During progression, virus phenotypes with the ability to use CXCR4 emerge in about 50% of infected individuals. 5. 5. Intrahost evolution of HIV-1 phenotypes

    Author : Marie Borggren; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : HIV-1 evolves constantly within an infected individual, due to its mutation-prone viral enzyme, high viral turnover and pressure from the host immune system. Therefore, viruses isolated at different time points from the same individual are never exactly the same and, accordingly, rarely function the same way. READ MORE
