  1. 1. Teratogenic Predisposition in Diabetic Rat Pregnancy

    Author : Andreas Ejdesjö; Ulf J Eriksson; Parri Wentzel; Niklas Nordquist; Gernot Desoye; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetes; malformations; teratogenic; advanced glycation end products; AGE; RAGE; oxidative stress; ROS; gene expression; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Pre-gestational diabetes increases the risk of congenital malformation in the offspring and both morbidity and mortality in the diabetic mother and her offspring. During pregnancy, high glucose levels act as a teratogen through several cellular and biochemical pathways and increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has a central role in diabetic embryopathy. 2. 2. Synaptic elimination and the complement system in Alzhaimer's disease

    Author : Jonny Daborg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Synapse; Alzheimer s disease; Genetics; CSF; Complement; RAGE;

    Abstract : The mechanisms behind Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are largely unknown. The disease is to a large extent hereditary, and the best pathophysiological correlate to the severity of the symptoms is loss of synapses. READ MORE

  3. 3. Sound propagation around off-shore wind turbines

    Author : Lisa Johansson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; wind turbine noise; off-shore wind powe; long-rage sound propagation; parabolic equation; scattering; water waves; Building engineering; Byggnadsteknik;

    Abstract : Low-frequency, long-range sound propagation over a seasurface has been calculated using a wide-angel Cranck-NicholsonParabolic Equation method. The model is developed toinvestigate noise from off-shore wind turbines. Thecalculations are made using normal meteorological conditions ofthe Baltic Sea. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies of high mobility group chromosomal protein 1 as a pro-inflammatory cytokine

    Author : Gail E Mullins; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : HMGB1; endothelial cells; pro-inflammatory; cytokine; RAGE;

    Abstract : High mobility group box chromosomal protein 1 (HMGB 1) is a nuclear protein recently recognised as a pro-inflammatory cytokine with implications both in acute and in chronic inflammation. HMGB1 has been reported to act as a late mediator of septic shock in mice. READ MORE

  5. 5. Renal effects of C-peptide in experimental type-1 diabetes mellitus

    Author : Björn Samnegård; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Diabetic nephropathy; C-peptide; captopril; albuminuria; glomerular hyperfiltration; glomerular hypertrophy; glomerular mesangium expansion; type-IV collagen; RAGE; renal blood flow;

    Abstract : The incidence and prevalence of diabetic nephropathy are increasing continuously, mainly due to the increase in type-2 diabetes. In contrast, the risk of diabetic nephropathy for the individual patient has decreased considerably in recent decades due to improved glycemic control, successful treatment of hypertension and hyperlipidemia and the use of renin angiotensin system inhibitors, which have protective effects beyond those on blood pressure.
