  4. 24. The importance of immunological, genetic and clinical factors for beta cell function in childhood diabetes

    Author : Eva Örtqvist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Type I diabetes; HLA-DQ; GAD65Ab; 1A-2Ab; ICA; GAD65 epitopeC-peptide; clinical remission; beta cell rest; diazoxide.;

    Abstract : Type I diabetes is caused by environmentally initiated, progressive autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells in genetically susceptible individuals, which results in insulin deficiency and hyperglycemia. At diagnosis, about 10-20 % of beta cells remain, but after insulin therapy is started, a period with regained secretive capacity follows. READ MORE

  5. 25. Perioperative nutrition and insulin resistance

    Author : Monika Svanfeldt; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Insulin sensitivity; insulin resistance; hyperinsulinaemic normoglycaemic clamps; wholebody glucose kinetics; whole-body protein kinetics; indirect calorimetry; surgery; carbohydrate loading; hypocaloric nutrition; bed rest and TPN;

    Abstract : Surgical trauma induces a catabolic response with development of insulin resistance as a central and well-characterised feature. In insulin resistance, the stimulating effect of insulin on peripheral glucose uptake and the suppressing effect of insulin on endogenous glucose release are decreased, resulting in hyperglycaemia.
