6. Reverse Transcriptase Activity Assays for Retrovirus Quantitation and Characterization
Abstract : Reverse transcriptase (RT) is a crucial enzyme for retrovirus replication, and its presence in the virion is indispensable for infectivity. This thesis illustrates the use of RT activity assays as tools for quantitation and characterization of different retroviruses, particularly HIV. READ MORE

7. The metabolism of HIV RT inhibitors : biochemical and clinical studies
Abstract : HIV infection is currently treated with a combination of nucleoside analogues and protease inhibitors. Nucleoside analogues inhibit HIV-1 reversed transcriptase (RT), a vital enzyme in the life cycle of HIV. Nucleoside analogues are phophorylated by host-cell enzymes to their respective triphosphate. 8. Neuropeptide Y - aspects of vasomotorresponses and receptor characterization
Abstract : Abstract The aims of the present thesis were to examine neuropeptide Y (NPY) responses in different human and guinea pig vascular beds and in cultured human vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) and to characterize, with different NPY agonists and the specific NPY Y1 receptor antagonist (BIBP3226), the NPY receptors involved. NPY-induced strong and potent contractions in human cerebral and subcutaneous arteries and in guinea pig basilar arteries. READ MORE

9. Hypoxia inducible factor-1α in renal cell carcinoma
Abstract : Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1α in Renal Cell Carcinoma Departments of Surgical and Perioperative Sciences, Urology and Andrology; Radiation Sciences, Oncology; Medical Biosciences, Pathology; and Medical Biosciences, Clinical Chemistry, Umeå University, Umeå, Sweden Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) accounts for approximately 2-3% of all human cancers. A distinguished feature of RCC is vascularisation and among the three dominating RCC types conventional RCC (cRCC) generally is more vascularised than papillary RCC (pRCC) and chromophobe RCC (chRCC). 10. Identification of abnormally expressed genes in skeletal muscle contributing to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
Abstract : The metabolic defects of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes can result from changes in gene expression and protein functions due to genetic and environmental influences. The aim of this study was to identify abnormally expressed genes associated with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes, and further to test whether possible defects are inherited or acquired.
