  1. 1. Solar energy for a brighter life. A case study of rural electrification through solar photovoltaic technology in the Eastern Province, Zambia

    Author : Mathias Gustavsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; rural development; rural electrification; distributed generation; photovoltaic technology; solar home system; energy services; Zambia; Sub Saharan Africa;

    Abstract : Electricity is taken for granted in many parts of the world. In Sub-Saharan Africa, typically less than 5% of the rural population have access to this energy source. Even though electricity in itself does not lead to development, it can support a development process. READ MORE

  2. 2. A System Dynamics Analysis of Cost-Recovery A Study of Rural Minigrid Utilities in Tanzania

    Author : Elias Hartvigsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; cost-recovery; system dynamics; minigrid; rural electrification;

    Abstract : Over one billion people live in poverty around the world. Access to modern energy sources such as electricity is considered important in social and economic development. READ MORE

  3. 3. Modeling rural Vietnamese households' use of cooking fuels

    Author : Niklas Vahlne; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; fuel switching; rural households; developing; cooking; fuel ladder; improved stoves; Vietnam;

    Abstract : AbstractA majority of rural households in the developing world still use solid biomass fuels for cooking, which has severe negative health effects, may be expensive, time consuming, and contributes to global warming. Options for interventions aimed at improving the energy situation for households include the dissemination of improved cook stoves (ICSs), increase of households possibilities to switch to more modern fuels, for example through subsidies for LPG, as well as increase of the rate of electrification. 4. 4. Planning Models for Single Wire Earth Return Power Distribution Networks

    Author : Geofrey Bakkabulindi; Lennart Söder; Mikael Amelin; Peiyuan Chen; KTH; []
    Keywords : Rural electrification; power distribution planning; Single Wire Earth Return; distribution power flow; power system modeling; SRA - Energy; SRA - Energi;

    Abstract : The high cost of grid extension to rural areas, often characterized by scattered communities with low load densities, requires the use of low cost electrification technologies to ensure economic viability. In Single Wire Earth Return (SWER) power distribution networks, the earth itself forms the current return path of the single phase system leading to significant cost savings on conductors, poles and poletop hardware compared to conventional systems. 5. 5. Lithium-ion batteries for off-grid PV-systems

    Author : Fabian Benavente; Göran Lindbergh; Anders Olof Lundblad; Saul Cabrera; Daniel Abraham; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Lithium-ion batteries; aging; partial cycles; DVA; EIS; NCA; stationary energy systems; PV systems; rural electrification.; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis provides a comprehensive and detailed analysis on the effect ofthe battery operation strategy on the lifetime of commercial lithium-ionbatteries and on the economics of off-grid photovoltaic (PV)-batterysystems.Lithium-ion batteries play a key role in the transition to a fossil-freesociety.
