  1. 16. A1M: a heme and radical binding protein. A study on structure, function and mechanisms

    Author : Sigurbjörg Rutardottir; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; α1-microglobulin; oxidative stress; heme; radiation; reactive oxygen species; preeclampsia;

    Abstract : This thesis describes functional and structural studies of the human protein α1-microglobulin (A1M), an evolutionarily well-conserved 26 kDa plasma and tissue protein mainly synthesized in the liver. A1M belongs to the lipocalin protein family. Lipocalins share a very similar structur, an 8-stranded β-barrel forming a hydrophobic pocket. READ MORE

  2. 17. Fractionated irradiation of salivary glands : loss and protection of function

    Author : Ulrika Funegård; Thorild Ericson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Irradiation; salivary glands; saliva composition; antioxidants; radioprotection;

    Abstract : Radiotherapy of malignancies in the head and neck often involves the major and minor salivary glands in the radiation field. Adverse effects, such as dry mouth symptoms, are common after such therapy. READ MORE

  3. 18. On-line Mobile in situ Gamma Spectrometry

    Author : Thomas Hjerpe; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; radiobiologi; Kärnfysik; Nuclear physics; radiation protection.; 137Cs; peak-to-valley method; depth distribution; orphan source search; orphan sources; emergency preparedness; mobile gamma spectrometry; nuclear accidents; Nuclear medicine; radiobiology; Nukleärmedicin;

    Abstract : Mobile in situ gamma spectrometry is an important instrument in the emergency preparedness for nuclear accidents. This work contributes through the development of strategies and analysis methods for two applications: an on-line search for gamma-emitting orphan sources and on-line estimation of the depth distribution of 137Cs. 4. 19. Formation and repair of complex DNA damage induced by ionizing radiation

    Author : Karin Magnander; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ionizing radiation; clustered damage; chromatin structure; DSB;

    Abstract : DNA is the critical target when cells are exposed to ionizing radiation, a potent stressor with capacity to produce complex DNA damages, thereby increasing the risk of cancer. DNA and associated histones form chromatin, which is an effective protection against ionizing radiation. READ MORE

  5. 20. Spatial Variation in Near-Ground Radiation and Low Temperature - Interactions with Forest Vegetation

    Author : Kristina Blennow; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; light interception; hemispherical photograph; growth; forest fragmentation; fluorescence; cold-induced photoinhibition; GIS; view factor; radiative cooling; frost protection; agro-climatic mapping; forest clear-cut; local climate; Microclimate; Physical geography; geomorphology; pedology; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi;

    Abstract : Low temperature has a large impact on the survival and distribution of plants. Interactive effects with high irradiance lead to cold-induced photoinhibition, which may impact on the establishment and growth of tree seedlings. READ MORE
