  1. 11. Environmental history in southern Mozambique : Reconstruction of flooding events, hydroclimate and sea-level dynamics since mid-Holocene

    Author : Sandra Raúl Sitoe; Jan Risberg; Elin Norström; Lars-Ove Westerberg; John Compton; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Southern Africa; Limpopo River floodplain; flooding event; sea-level change; climate change; diatoms; phytoliths; mineral magnetics; grain-size; radiocarbon dating; kvartärgeologi; Quaternary Geology;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis has been to reconstruct paleoenvironment, paleohydrology and paleoclimate in coastal southern Mozambique, with emphasis on tracing past flooding events on the lower Limpopo River floodplain. In order to extend flood chronologies beyond periods covered by instrumental data, sediments from lakes on the floodplain were studied (Lake Lungué, Coassane Oxbow, Lake Magandane and Lake Soane). 2. 12. Palaeogenomic reconstruction of woolly mammoth evolutionary history and extinction dynamics

    Author : Marianne Dehasque; Love Dalén; David Díez-del-Molino; Rike Stelkens; Rebecca N. Johnson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; woolly mammoth; Mammuthus primigenius; extinction; Wrangel Island; ancient DNA; palaeogenomics; radiocarbon dating; structural variants; genome erosion; population structure; Systematic Zoology; zoologisk systematik och evolutionsforskning;

    Abstract : Biodiversity is declining globally. Yet, the biological and genetic processes associated with these declines on a longer timescale are still poorly understood. Ancient DNA is a powerful tool to study evolution in real-time. Despite advances in the field, there is further need for refinement of laboratory and computational techniques. READ MORE

  3. 13. Population Dynamics, Diet and Migrations of the Únetice Culture in Poland

    Author : Dalia Anna Pokutta; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; palaeodemography; Bronze Age; Central Europe; Únětice culture; stable isotopes analyses; 13C and 15N analyses; 87Sr 86 strontium analyses; radiocarbon dating; palaeopathology; mobility; diet; prehistoric identity; child in prehistory; eldery in prehistory; Únětice tribal elites; prehistoric homicide; fertility; mortality; population growth; Bronze Age transportation; theory of migrations; Silesia; Wrocław; Nebra;

    Abstract : Únětice kulturens roll när det kommer till formandet av bronsåldern i Europa kan inte överskattas. Uppkomsten och existensen av denna originella, utvidgande och dynamiska population markerar en av de mest intressanta tidpunkterna i europeisk förhistoria, tidpunkten då en era avslutas och en ny tar vid. 4. 14. Vegetation history, human impact and palaeogeography of West Estonia : Pollen analytical studies of lake and bog sediments

    Author : Siim Veski; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Vegetation history; human impact; palaeogeography; shoreline displacement; The Baltic Sea; the Yoldia Sea; the Ancylus Lake; the Litorina Sea; pollen analysis; macro fossil analysis; bog and lake sediments; radiocarbon dating; Holocene; Estonia; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Earth Sciences with Specialization Environmental Analysis; geovetenskap med inriktning mot miljöanalys;

    Abstract : The history of Holocene vegetation in western Estonia and the West Estonian Archipelago is described. Early Holocene sea level changes in the area are reconstructed, and human impact on the vegetation during the Late Holocene is discussed West Estonia was divided into five study areas (Rummu-Maardu, Mustjärve, Velise-Kiilaspere, Tôstamaa Peninsula, and northern Saaremaa in the West Estonian Archipelago, from north to south). 5. 15. Late Quaternary ice sheet history and dynamics in central and southern Scandinavia

    Author : Timothy Johnsen; Helena Alexanderson; James T. Teller; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Scandinavian ice sheet; ice sheet dynamics; luminescence dating; cosmogenic exposure dating; geochronology; moraine; interstadial; deglaciation; nunatak; Quaternary geology; Kvartärgeologi; kvartärgeologi; Quarternary Geology;

    Abstract : Recent work suggests an emerging new paradigm for the Scandinavian ice sheet (SIS); one of a dynamically fluctuating ice sheet. This doctoral research project explicitly examines the history and dynamics of the SIS at four sites within Sweden and Norway, and provides results covering different time periods of glacial history.
