  1. 16. Characterisation of airborne particles from rail traffic

    Author : Saeed Abbasi; Ulf Sellgren; Ulf Olofsson; Mats Gustafsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; airborne; railway; brake; block; Other engineering mechanics; Övrig teknisk mekanik; SRA - Transport; SRA - Transport; Järnvägsgruppen - Effektiva tågsystem för godstrafik; Järnvägsgruppen - Effektiva tågsystem för godstrafik; Järnvägsgruppen - Effektiva tågsystem för persontrafik; Järnvägsgruppen - Effektiva tågsystem för persontrafik; Järnvägsgruppen - Tribologi; The KTH Railway Group - Tribology;

    Abstract : Since the investigation of wear particles in rail transport started in late-1910s, the high mass concentration of these particles has raised worries among researchers concerned with air quality. However, effective action has yet to be taken because of lack of relevant knowledge. READ MORE

  2. 17. On Derailment-Worthiness in Rail Vehicle Design : Analysis of vehicle features influencing derailment processes and consequences

    Author : Dan Brabie; Evert Andersson; Roderick A Smith; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; derailment; bogie design; wheel-sleeper impact; simulation; deviation; vehicle inter-connection; guidance mechanism; substitute guidance; articulated train; railway safety; Vehicle engineering; Farkostteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis aims at systematically studying the possibilities of minimizing devastating consequences of high-speed rail vehicle derailments by appropriate measures and features in the train design including the running gear. Firstly, an empirical database is established containing as much relevant information as possible of past incidents and accidents that have occurred at substantial running speeds due to mechanical failure close to the interface between the running gear and the track. 3. 18. On Rail Vehicle Dynamics in Unsteady Crosswind Conditions : Studies Related to Modelling, Model Validation and Active Suspension

    Author : Dirk Thomas; Berg Mats; Sebastian Stichel; Jordi Vinolas; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Järnvägsgruppen - Fordonsteknik; Järnvägsgruppen - Fordonsteknik;

    Abstract : Crosswind stability of rail vehicles has been a research area for several decades, mainlymotivated by vehicle overturning accidents and higher speeds, but in recent times also byissues of lower energy consumption and track maintenance costs demanding lower vehi-cle weights. During everyday operation, rail vehicles are subjected to substantial lateralinfluences from track curves, track irregularities and crosswind, leading to large suspen-sion deflections and increased crosswind sensitivity. 4. 19. Aerodynamics simulations of ground vehicles in unsteady crosswind

    Author : Tristan Favre; Gunilla Efraimsson; Michael Leschziner; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Detached-Eddy Simulations; Crosswind; Aerodynamics; ;

    Abstract : Ground vehicles, both on roads or on rail, are sensitive to crosswinds and the handling, travelling speeds or in some cases, safety can be affected. Full modelling of the crosswind stability of a vehicle is a demanding task as the nature of the disturbance, the wind gust, is complex and the aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics and driver reactions interact with each other. 5. 20. Long freight trains and long-term rail surface damage

    Author : Visakh V Krishna; Sebastian Stichel; Mats Berg; Carlos Casanueva; João Pombo; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; track friendliness; rail surface damage; multi-body simulation; longitudinal train dynamics; track maintenance; rolling contact fatigue; wear; Engineering Mechanics; Teknisk mekanik; Vehicle and Maritime Engineering; Farkostteknik; Järnvägsgruppen - Effektiva tågsystem för godstrafik; Järnvägsgruppen - Effektiva tågsystem för godstrafik;

    Abstract : Track damage due to progressively increasing tonnage, especially due to longer and heavier freight trains, is one of the major problems faced in the European rail sector. In this context, to stay competitive, optimal track maintenance practices, track-friendly vehicles and safe operations of long freight trains assume prominence. READ MORE
