6. The Quest for Functional Quasi-Species in Glutathione Transferase Libraries
Abstract : Glutathione transferases (GSTs) are good candidates for investigations of enzyme evolution, due to their broad substrate specificities and structural homology. The primary role of GSTs is to act as phase II detoxifying enzymes protecting the cell from toxic compounds of both endo- and exogenous origins. READ MORE

7. The enzymatic machinery of leukotriene biosynthesis : Studies on ontogenic expression, interactions and function
Abstract : Leukotrienes (LTs) are biologically active arachidonic acid (AA) derivatives generated by the 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) pathway. They are produced by myeloid cells. 5-LO converts AA to LTA4 in cooperation with 5-LO activating protein (FLAP). LTA4 is converted to LTB4, by LTA4-hydrolase (LTA4H) or to LTC4 by LTC4-synthase (LTC4S). READ MORE

8. Mechanisms of formation and protection against oxidative DNA damage in vitro and in vivo
Abstract : Oxidative DNA damage has been linked to cancer and aging as well as other diseases. The aim of this thesis was to study the mechanisms for DNA damage generated in cells or in vitro systems by ionizing radiation or transition metals like iron ions. READ MORE
