  1. 6. Local Adaptation, Countergradient Variation and Ecological Genetics of Life-history Traits in Rana Temporaria

    Author : Ane Timenes Laugen; Wolf Blanckenhorn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; amphibians; Bergmanns rule; body size clines; countergradient variation; developmental rate; FST; temperature; QST; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; populationsbiologi; Population Biology;

    Abstract : The main aim of this work was to identify local adaptation processes in amphibian populations, thereby improving the general understanding of genetics and mechanisms behind the evolution and maintenance of biological diversity. Phenotypic and genetic variation in life-history traits was studied within and between populations common frog (Rana temporaria) populations along a 1600 km transect from southern Sweden to northern Finland. 2. 7. Evolutionary implications of acidification: a frog’s eye view

    Author : Katja Räsänen; Andrew Hendry; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; acid stress; amphibians; local adaptation; maternal effects; maternal investment; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; populationsbiologi; Population Biology;

    Abstract : Understanding the diversity of life is one of the main aims of evolutionary biology, and requires knowledge of the occurrence and causes of adaptive genetic differentiation among geographically distinct populations. Environmental stress caused by acidity may cause strong directional selection in natural populations, but is little explored from an evolutionary perspective. READ MORE

  3. 8. Physiological and Environmental Processes Influencing Growth Strategies in Amphibian Larvae

    Author : Emma Dahl; Anssi Laurila; Felicity Huntingford; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; growth; growth strategies; amphibians; latitudinal gradient; growth hormone GH ; corticosterone CORT ; breeding phenology; compensatory growth; compensatory strategies; Biology; Biologi; Biologi med inriktning mot populationsbiologi; Biology with specialization in Population Biology;

    Abstract : Cost and benefits of high individual growth rates are likely to vary across different environments leading to geographic differentiation in growth strategies. In ectotherms, habitats constrained by short growing seasons favour rapid growth and development leading to adaptive latitudinal clines in these traits. READ MORE

  4. 9. Phenotypic plasticity and local adaptation in tadpoles

    Author : Björn Lardner; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; salinity tolerance; trade-off; life-history; tail depth; inducible defence; antipredator strategies; tadpoles; anurans; amphibians; Phenotypic plasticity; local adaptation; competitive ability; allozymes.; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : Amphibian larvae are plastic in many traits. Can plasticity buffer population divergence, so that local adaptation is more common in non-plastic traits? I argue that this may be the case for adaptive plastic responses. READ MORE

  5. 10. Polybrominated diphenylethers in the environment - Local and long range transport

    Author : Arnout ter Schure; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Substance Flow Analysis; Spatial Variation; Sources; PCB; PBDE; Latitude; Global Fractionation; Frogs; Deposition; Atmosphere; Baltic Sea; Ekologi; Temperature; Washout ratio; Ecology;

    Abstract : I have studied the sources, long range transport, and rates of flow of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), from the technosphere to the Baltic ecosystems. PBDEs are mainly used in polymers, which are applied in electrical equipment to prevent overheating or flashover and are produced in large quantities. READ MORE
