11. Optical Diagnostics for Quantitative Potassium Chemistry in Biomass Thermochemical Conversion Processes
Abstract : Biomass is an essential sustainable and carbon-neutral energy source. Through thermochemical conversion processes, such as combustion and gasification, biomass can generally be used in boilers to provide heat and/or power. Biomass fuels contain varying amounts of potassium, chlorine and sulfur. READ MORE

12. Multi-Photon Interactions with a Time Structure
Abstract : The present thesis concerns aspects of the interaction ofmatter in gas, liquid and solid phases, with electromagneticradiation, ranging from the optical to the X-ray region. Overthe last decade the availability of ultrashort strong laserpulses as well as of high power synchrotron sources of tunableX-ray radiation has stimulated a rapid development of newexperimental techniques which makes it possible to analysedifferent physical, chemical and biological processes inunprecedented detail. 13. Ultrafast Dynamics in Ground and Excited States of Porphyrin Molecules
Abstract : This thesis describes inter and intramolecular dynamics in porphyrin molecules. To create a basis for understanding the energy and electron transfer processes in photosynthesis, the ultrafast dynamics of monomeric chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and bacteriochlorophyll a were studied with ultrashort laser pulses. 14. Anion redox processes in novel battery cathode materials investigated by soft X-ray spectroscopy
Abstract : This thesis presents experimental investigations of the electronic structure of emerging and novel cathode materials used in lithium- and sodium-ion batteries. The investigated materials include a range of oxide materials containing the elements nickel and manganese. READ MORE

15. A novel technology for studying the disposition of drugs and toxicants in the lung : short inhalation exposures of the isolated and perfused rat lung to respirable dry particle aerosols
Abstract : The disposition of solutes following the deposition of inhaled substances in the lung is a complex process that proceeds along parallel paths; passive diffusion of solutes through the air/blood barrier and local metabolism followed by blood-borne clearance to the circulation. Using the isolated and perfused lung (IPL) the pulmonary disposition of inhaled particles can be studied in great detail without interference from distal organs and systemic exposure. READ MORE
