  1. 1. Uterus transplantation: an experimental study in the rat model

    Author : Shamima N Akhi; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; infertility; microsurgery; pregnancy; rat; transplantation; uterus;

    Abstract : One of the last frontiers to conquer in infertility research is to find a treatment for uterine factor infertility, which affects around 2500 Swedish women. These women cannot become pregnant or carry a pregnancy due to absence of uterus or presence of non-functioning uterus. READ MORE

  2. 2. Connexin43 in astroglial gap junctions. Regulation by age, neurotransmitters, GH and IGF-I

    Author : N David Åberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Connexin43; rat; development; hypophysectomy; primary culture; ; mRNA; gap junction; somatotropin; IGF-I; serotonin; glutamate; ; brain region heterogeneity; calcium wave; astrocyte; astroglial cell; ; gap junctional coupling.;

    Abstract : Connexins form gap junctions that are aqueous pores allowing low-molecular (.... READ MORE

  3. 3. Development of biosynthetic conduits for peripheral nerve repair

    Author : Aleksandra McGrath; Liudmila N Novikova; John Haycock; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biosynthetic conduit; Mesenchymal stem cells; Nerve graft; Nerve tissue engineering; Peripheral nerve injury; Schwann cells;

    Abstract : Peripheral nerve injuries are often associated with significant loss of nervous tissue leading to poor restoration of function following repair of injured nerves. Although the injury gap could be bridged by autologous nerve graft, the limited access to donor material and additional morbidity such as loss of sensation and scarring have prompted a search for biosynthetic nerve transplants. 4. 4. Environment-Sensitive Multifunctional Drug Delivery Systems

    Author : Jian Qin; Mamoun Muhammed; Marcus Textor; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Materials chemistry; Materialkemi;

    Abstract : Drug delivery systems (DDS) with multiple functionalities such as environment-sensitive drug release mechanisms and visualization agents have motivated the biomedical community as well as materials chemists for more than a decade. This dissertation is concerned with the development of nanoparticles for multifunctional DDS  to tackle several crucial challenges in these complex systems, including polymeric nanospheres which respond to temperature change, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles/polymeric composite for magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents and drug carriers, immunoresponse of nanomaterials and injectable magnetic field sensitive ferrogels. 5. 5. Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells and injections of microRNA as therapeutics for nervous system repair

    Author : Mallappa K. Kolar; Lev N. Novikov; Paul J. Kingham; Mikael Wiberg; Elisabet Åkesson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; spinal cord injury; peripheral nerve injury; mesenchymal stem cells; regeneration; neurotrophic factor; angiogenic factor;

    Abstract : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord (SCI) and peripheral nerve (PNI) affect several thousand people worldwide every year. At present, there is no effective treatment for SCI and despite continuous improvements in microsurgical reconstructive techniques for PNI, many patients are still left with permanent, devastating neurological dysfunction.
