  1. 1. Human genetic factors involved in immunity to Plasmodium falciparum infection

    Author : Manijeh Vafa Homann; Marita Troye-Blomberg; Marcel Hommel; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plasmodium falciparum; Malaria; Immunity; Ethnic groups; Mali; Senegal; Genetic factors; IL-4; IL-10; Polymorphism; MOI; RBC variants; Immunology; Immunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : This study investigated the associations between IL-4 -590 C/T and IL-10 -1087 A/G polymorphisms and malariometric indexes in the Fulani and the Dogon ethnic groups living in sympatry in Mali and differing in susceptibility to malaria. The correlations between antibodies level and parasitological data as well as splenomegaly were assessed. READ MORE

  2. 2. Automated serological technique with special emphasis on a solid phase test for red cell antibody detection in routine blood banking

    Author : Suzanne Sallander; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : solid phase; RBC antibody screening; alloimmunisation in pregnancy; automation;

    Abstract : Automated serological techniques for erythrocyte antigen typing and antibody screening are presented and evaluated in a larger number of samples and throughout routine processing. Both techniques are microplate-adapted with computerised sample identification, sample and reagent dispensing, and interpretation of results. READ MORE

  3. 3. Erythrocyte amino acids in health and renal failure and their association to the IGF-I/IGFBP-1 axis

    Author : José Carolino Divino Filho; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : amino acid; ASP DNA; catabolism dialysis; erythrocytes; glutamate; glutamine; health; human; IGF-I; IGFBP-1; muscle; plasmaprotein intake; rat; renal failure; uraemia;

    Abstract : Abnormalities in amino acids (AA) metabolism in uraemia have mainly been reported to occur in plasma and muscle. No investigation has been undertaken to evaluate the AA levels in plasma, muscle and red blood cells (RBC) simultaneously, although the RBC pool of free AA constitutes a large proportion of the free AA in blood, and RBC are involved in the interorgan transport of AA. 4. 4. Phosphatidylethanol in blood as a marker of alcohol abuse

    Author : Arthur Varga; Associativ inlärning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; PKC; MCV; ELSD; HPLC; red blood cell; phospholipase D; phosphatidylethanol; ethanol; alcohol abuse; state marker; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Biological markers offer a way of assessing ethanol intake and determining whether a health problem is alcohol related. This study investigated the use of phosphatidylethanol (PEth) in blood as a new marker of alcohol abuse. READ MORE

  5. 5. Chronic bone marrow failure and transfusion patterns : epidemiological studies of blood transfusions and outcomes in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes

    Author : Jenny Rydén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) encompass a diverse group of clonal hematological malignancies characterized by dysplasia and ineffective hematopoiesis with an increased risk of leukemic evolution. It is a disease of the elderly with a median age of nearly 75 years. READ MORE
