16. On Real-Time Optimization using Extremum Seeking Control and Economic Model Predictive Control : With Applications to Bioreactors and Paper Machines
Abstract : Process optimization is used to improve the utility and the economic performance of industrial processes, and is as such central in most automation strategies. In this thesis, two feedback-based methods for online process optimization are considered: Extremum seeking control (ESC), a classic model-free method used for steady-state optimization which dates back to the early 1900's, and economic model predictive control (EMPC), a more recent method which utilizes a model to dynamically optimize the closed-loop process economics in real time. 17. Supervisory control of complex propulsion subsystems
Abstract : Modern gasoline and diesel combustion engines are equipped with several subsystems with the goal to reduce fuel consumption and pollutant exhaust emissions. Subsystem synergies could be harnessed using the supervisory control approach. Look-ahead information can be used to potentially optimise power-train control for real time implementation. READ MORE

18. Automated Manufacture of Fertilizing Agglomerates from Burnt Wood Ash
Abstract : In Sweden, extensive research is conducted to find alternative sources of energy that should partly replace the electric power production from nuclear power. With the ambition to create a sustainable system for producing energy, the use of renewable energy is expected to grow further and biofuels are expected to account for a significant part of this increase. 19. Automatic memory management for flexible real-time systems
Abstract : In a flexible real-time system, the constraints in available CPU time and memory lead to resource management problems, which must be handled carefully in order to maximize quality of service while avoiding overload. Managing CPU time -- scheduling -- is well studied and dynamic scheduling is widely accepted in the real-time industry. READ MORE

20. Control and Communication with Signal-to-Noise Ratio Constraints
Abstract : This thesis is about two problems in the intersection of communication and control theory. Their common feature is that they involve communication over an additive white noise channel with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) constraint. The first problem concerns the transmission of a real-valued signal from a partially observed Markov source. READ MORE
