  1. 1. An in situ spectro-electrochemical study of aluminium/polymer interfaces : development of ATR-FTIR and its integration with EIS for corrosion studies

    Author : Maria Öhman; Christofer Leygraf; Jan-Olov Nilsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; : ATR-FTIR; EIS; spectro-electrochemical; interface; aluminium; polymer; Other chemistry; Övrig kemi;

    Abstract : In order to extend the applications of aluminium, organic coatings may be applied on sheet materials, for instance for corrosion protection or aesthetic surface finish purposes in the automotive and construction industries, or on foil materials in the flexible packaging industry. The most common mechanisms for deterioration and structural failure of organically coated aluminium structures are triggered by exposures to the surrounding environment. READ MORE

  2. 2. Development of ATR-FTIR Kretschmann Spectroscopy for In situ Studies of Metal / Polymer Interfaces : and its Intergration with EIS for Exposure to Corrosive Conditions

    Author : Maria Öhman; Christofer Leygraf; Herman Terryn; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Abstract : The environmental stability of a metal / polymer interface is essential for the durability and mechanical stability of constructions in several important areas such as the automotive, offshore, building and aerospace industries. The protective capability of a polymer film is strongly connected to its barrier properties, but the transport of water and corrosive constituents through the polymer and the subsequent processes at the metal surface are complicated to analyse in detail. 3. 3. Exploring fatty acid derivatives from renewable resources as raw materials for coating applications

    Author : Samer Nameer; Mats Johansson; Mats Martinelle; Dean Webster; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; epoxy; vegetable oils; birch bark; thermoset; bio-based; fatty acid; renewable resources; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : In the work presented herein, epoxy fatty acid derivatives were explored in the formation of thermosets for coating applications. The epoxy fatty acid derivatives were obtained from renewable resources such as birch tree bark and epoxidized linseed oil. READ MORE

  4. 4. Effect of Wood Constituents Oxidation of Unsaturated Fatty Acids

    Author : Alireza Salehi Movahed; Mats K.G. Johansson; Mats Johnssson; Karin Jacobsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Wood constituents; oil; oxidation; unstatured fatty acids; lignin; model lignin compounds; Polymer chemistry; Polymerkemi;

    Abstract : This work presents the mechanisms of free radicals in a model system between fatty acids oxidation process and wood components. The aim is to create a better understanding of new environmentally friendly materials for exterior wood protection. READ MORE

  5. 5. Consumption and loss of commercial stabilisers in polyethylene exposed to different natural environments

    Author : Nadejzda Haider; KTH; []
    Keywords : LDPE; MDPE; ultrasonic extraction; polymer additives; stabilisers; antioxidants; HALS; Irganox 1010; Irgafos 168; migration; consumption; GC-MS; additive degradation products;

    Abstract : A procedure for the extraction and analysis of commercialstabilisers in low density and medium density polyethylene(LDPE and MDPE) films was developed and used to study theconsumption of stabilisers in polymers exposed to differentnatural environments. An ultrasonic technique was applied toextract HALS-3 (Chimassorb 944) from LDPE film and antioxidants(Irganox 1010 and Irgafos 168) from MDPE film. READ MORE
