Abstract : The work presented in this thesis is a study of the spatial genetic structure of two species of scleractinian corals, Pocillopora damicornis and Platygyra daedalea. The overall objective was to investigate the current capacity of MPAs to preserve and restore coral reefs and to contribute information to improve management decisions. READ MORE

  3. 23. Coral Reef Habitats and Fish Connectivity : Implications for coastal management and fishery

Abstract : Coral reefs have one of the highest levels of biodiversity of all ecosystems in the world and are important for both human livelihood and food security throughout many tropical countries. However, due to increased anthropogenic pressure on marine ecosystems, especially during the last couple of decades, coral reefs have become critically over-fished, and many reefs are now in a degraded state and are facing additional future threats due to further over-exploitation, chemical pollution, sedimentation, and effects of climate change. Abstract : Coral reefs are one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, harbouring approximately twenty-five percent of the diverse eukaryotic life in the oceans, while also being important economically for millions of people worldwide. Despite their importance, coral reefs are menaced of a very steep decline due to pollution and anthropogenic climate change. READ MORE

Abstract : Artificial reefs are structures placed in the sea to promote marine life. Although constructions such as oil-rigs, wind farms, bridges and pier pilings are built for other purposes, they could be regarded as artificial reefs as they add new surfaces in the oceans, susceptible to colonization by marine organism.
